Gunn has helped achieve stability, strong operations and increased ridership during a time of significant financial pressures. Ive never had regrets. Ive enjoyed it. Before working for Amtrak, Gunn was head of the New York City Transit Agency from 1984 to 1990 and commissioner of the Toronto Transit Commission from 1995 to 1999. He also headed transit systems in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Gunn has a philosophy called "state of good repair" where the first priority is to maintain infrastructure and equipment, making regular repairs where needed and retiring equipment from service at the end of its life-cycle. His tenure at the TTC was also marked by changes in management structure, which were criticized by some (including his successor, Rick Ducharme, in a July 1999 Toronto Star article). He also argued against new subway construction. Like those experiments, he could sure use a nice grant to fund his musical research, the compositional results of which appeal even to the dogs. He is one of few composers who works exclusively in the pluperfect tense, thereby often conveniently finishing a composition before having to start it. Etude Bruté is such a tune; while written umpteen years ago, it has yet to set foot on a sheet of manuscript paper. Mr. Gunn studied composition at a big university not noted for its music department, but boy could they do football. Bitter at not making the marching band, he assembled the Well-Tempered Chamber String Band of Greater Columbus, which folded after one performance of his Crapsody. Trouble with his piano studies led to a dependency on halvah and a penchant for wearing mismatched socks. His piano teacher, on the other hand, went on to a marvelous career in the pet food industry. When lumped together as a whole, Mr. Gunn's tunes struggle to make sense, but when individually scrutinized by persons schooled in Fibonacci, the character of each may begin to resemble what Native Americans call...."the worst plucked parts of the crow." This is good. Forces of nature whose goals are frequently at odds with psychic commonality contribute to the rhythmic diversity which permeates many of the selections. Furthermore, his march music, while not openly shunning B naturals, strongly hints of a predisposition towards every other note in the harmonic catalogue, suggesting that his collegiate counterpoint studies were spent not poring over scores but rather pawing through powdered chihuahua flans at the local Bolivian café.
