Nancy Drew And The Secret Of Immortality James Steffen looks at the Bonita Granville series for Turner Classic Movies. http://alt.tcm.turner.com/MONTH_SPOTS/00/04/drew.htm
Extractions: Nancy Drew was no shrinking violet. The driven amateur detective was one of the first role models for young women to look up. Since "The Secret of the Old Clock," was published in 1930, the Nancy Drew series has sold over 80 million copies worldwide. As the books were gaining an audience, Warner Bros. produced four snappily paced B-pictures based on the stories. Transforming the spunky girl sleuth into 15-year-old Bonita Granville, the Nancy Drew films capture a bit of magic on their own. Carolyn Keene, the author of the Nancy Drew books, is as fictional as the teenage heroine. It was Edward Stratemeyer who was the man behind the curtain. Stratemeyer wrote and later oversaw the publication of these children's adventure and mystery books. After he died in 1930 his daughters managed the publishing syndicate by hiring writers to pen the mysteries; paid a flat fee, these ghostwriters agreed under contract not reveal their identity.

Extractions: For Women's History and Culture Girls' literature has long sought to delineate the "proper" role of a girl in the home and in the world, and to prepare her for her future role as the "light of the home." Overtly in etiquettes and "conduct of life" books, and more surreptitiously in novels and storybooks, girls' literature has served to mold young women according to the pervading values of the time. Often, books such as The Motor Girls seemed to encourage a sense of freedom and self-sufficiency in girls, but on closer inspection they actually reinforced the imperative of home and family. If a girl had aspirations outside the home, a vast body of girls' literature guided her towards professions considered appropriate for girls, such as nursing or teaching. Of course there have always been girls who didn't quite fit the mold. Girls' literature, particularly in the second half of the twentieth century, has reflected this sense of not belonging. Books such as Tomboy attempted to guide these girls back to the mainstream, but others such as

Bootnotes By Drew Cullen Published Friday 22nd March 2002 10:06Â GMT Kevin Warwick, the nutty professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, has moved one step closer to man machine mind meld. He's had a microchip implanted into his arm, in a "ground-breaking attempt to create the world's first integrated data link between man and computer". "If successful, the experiment...will show that it is possible to capture data signals such as movement commands and physical emotions including pain and pleasure and transmit them to other human beings." That's a big "If". And when it comes to physical emotions that's a very big "If". In a press release, Warwick says the experiment is a small step in harnessing computers to the human body. It also marks a giant step in the very public career of Captain Cyborg.
