Extractions: TWO of the most hyped entries of the ongoing Metro Manila Film Festival showed a lot of potential that sadly, werent fully realized. Both Dekada 70 and Mano Po sought to address social issues. The films were partly successful; the fact that they were made at all is something to sing about. Still, they failed to be the landmark movies their filmmakers thought they would be. That 70s show Chito Roños Dekada 70 tells the tale of a housewife (played by Vilma Santos). The plot begins in the late 60s, when the political turmoil was about to begin. The events, however, were just things Vilma would learn about on television. Shes too busy raising her five sons. Martial law is declared and the terror that happens suddenly comes too close to home. Eldest son (Piolo Pascual) becomes an activist and goes underground while younger brother Marvin Agustin becomes a writer of subversive material. Problems mount when another son (Danilo Barrios) starts ignoring the curfew hours. Based on the story by Lualhati Bautista, Dekada 70 attempts too hard to be too many things. The story is supposed to be simple; its about a middle-class family coping with the events surrounding them. Yet everything seems to happen to this family; theyre hardly normal and too incredible to be convincing.
