The doctrine holds that human beings require a special divine assistance in their ordinary cognitive activities. Although most closely associated with Augustine and his scholastic followers, the doctrine has its origins in the ancient period and would reappear, transformed, in the early modern era. The theory of divine illumination is generally conceived of as distinctively Christian, distinctively medieval, and distinctively Augustinian. There is some justification for this, of course, inasmuch as Christian medieval philosophers gave the theory serious and sustained discussion, and inasmuch as Augustine gave illumination a very prominent role in his theory of knowledge. Still, it is better to think of the theory in a wider context. Divine illumination played a prominent part in ancient Greek philosophy, in the later Greek commentary tradition, in neo-Platonism, and in medieval Islamic philosophy. Moreover, it was Christian medieval philosophers, near the end of the thirteenth century, who were ultimately responsible for decisively refuting the theory. I will suggest that we view this last development as the first great turning point in the history of cognitive theory.

Musical styles converge from lavish orchestral extravaganzas through big Hollywood-style musical numbers to the ever so nifty pop melodies which have been Divine Comedy's route to chart success. Neil Hannon is frequently compared to Jarvis Cocker, and there is no denying that he shares a certain British quirky wit with the Tall Dark One, but he's not like Jarvis, he doesn't draw from the seamy side of working-class life. Oh no, not he. His is a magpie's nest of ersatz references plundered from art, cinema, literature, and music. He has never had a proper job. After mediocre performance at school he was accepted to do an Art Foundation course at Liverpool Polytechnic. He decided to take a year out to try his hand at music and never returned to the real world. In 1989 he formed The Divine Comedy. In 1991 he was signed by Keith Cullen's Setanta label, and in 1992 his fellow members couldn't sustain the poverty and disappointment of their unsuccessful life and deserted him. Cullen's patronage gave him the security to keep plugging on. Unperturbed by this abandonment, Neil seized this opportunity and reinvented The Divine Comedy. Gone was the REM-style indie-guitar-infested music. He took some songs he already had, and with a collection of musicians, followed his instinct and set about developing his own musical style.

Extractions: happy happy joy joy could easily sum up the band, by divine right . everyone must come to see this band if only to catch the facial expressions of guitarist and vocalist, jose contreras. we liked them, liked them a lot! actually, we loved them. they're a retro-rock-pop flavoured music and they take common phrases like 'come on everybody, get down,' but they do it with such style that you don't notice the commonplace lyrics at all. tight playing with many interesting musical breaks, the fans sitting on the cold stone floor, gathered cozily around the stage. the sliding foot movements of contreras and his incredibly expressive, happy face, make this band a joy to behold and hear. original song structures with unexpected breaks and twists keep by divine right above average in the musical department. a very nice break from the dull and serious three chord riff based bands that dominate the airwaves. changing style and rhythm on the fly is no prob for these guys. they can manage wild and chaotic to good solid rock in seconds. even resorting to standard 'na na na na na na' verse is fun when

Extractions: Early Boyhood Sri Swami Sivananda, the well-known Master of the 20th century, was born on September 8, 1887, at Pattamadai, in the Tirunelveli district in Tamilnadu, South India. His boyhood name was Kuppuswami. His saintly father, Vengu Iyer, was a devotee of Lord Siva and a descendant of the 16th century saint and scholar, Appayya Dikshitar. His mother was Parvatiammal. The spirit of giving freely, of sharing without any restraint, was ingrained in the Master from his very childhood. A boyhood friend of the Master, Swami Shuddhananda Bharati, recalled how Kuppuswami as a little lad one day ran out with his plate of food when he heard a beggar's cry outside. The intelligent lad had the gift of divine vision even at that age. If his father sent him to purchase fruit for his daily worship, the boy would often not hesitate to distribute the fruit to the poor and needy, returning home to inform his father that he had already worshipped God in the poor. What grand vision! The Master said that he was very mischievous as a lad. But it was not the kind of mischief we see in children these days. For instance, to astound and frighten his family, he would daringly jump into a dry well!

The problem for Europe, however, is the fundamentally anti-political nature of early Christianity, this anti-political aspect of foundational Christianity threw the institution of emperorship and kingship into question. If Christ rejects all political actions and institutions, how can one justify having a monarch? Saint Augustine in The City of God set out the theoretical framework for the institution of Christian monarchy in his concept of the Two Cities, the City of God, that is, the body of believers, and the City of Man, that is, the secular world. Although these two cities are in spiritual conflict, the City of Man was instituted by God, according to Augustine, in order to secure the safety and security of the members of the City of God. Therefore, monarchs are placed on their thrones by God for a specific purpose. Although they may be ungodly, to question their authority is in essence to question God's purpose for both the City of Man and the City of God. This, or some form of this, made up the foundation of medieval and Renaissance theories of monarchy.
