Extractions: On comedy. Main "Let America Laugh" is a mix of documentary and narrative starring Mr. Show's David Cross. The film features a uniquely pronounced division of comedic value. The documentary is very funny. It is funny for numerous reasons, most notably and obviously for the humorous play between Mr. Cross and his fans. Mr. Cross was a veteran of the Boston improvisational comedy scene before moving on to stand-up, TV and film, and his training is clearly evidenced. His cynical quips seem considerably less contrived and pretentious than in his stand-up bits, as do his stand-up bits reach high comic value when riffing as opposed to joke telling. An excellent example is one of the funniest stand-up bits in the film, Mr. Cross reading a Christian headline from the Atlanta daily paper. The documentary, however, is framed by a scenario which is not funny. These scenes feature an awkward boss character, overacted by an uncredited old man. Meant to cause laughter, they posit that David Cross leads two very different lives, one of uptight, white collar product peddling, the other of late night stand-up comedy shenanigans. The concept of David Crossa vocal critic of consumerism and the status quoworking in a cubicle is good for only one joke. However this only midly unbelieavable scenario is mined for many more jokes, resulting in an overload of the viewer's suspension of disbelief to the point where the viewer actually stops making assumptions about what might happen next. This all but eliminates the element of surprise by eliminating the viewer's assumption. Because it is the assumption, and not the scenario, which is to be undermined in the traditional comic scenario, the scenes quickly become cumbersome.
