In part III David talks about the mini-scandal that erupted around his act at a Howard Dean fundraiser, and the immaturity of the media when discussing racial issues. As readers know from watching the first two clips, there are various hazards associated with filming in a public park. Part IV is a bonus clip entitled, "I Will Burn You Down." There were lots of other fine folks enjoying Tompkins Square Park that day, who weren't too keen on our filming in "their park." Disparaging remarks were bandied about - Mike and Jason were accused of being NYU students, David was accused of impersonating a homeless person. Extractions: Paul Chenault on November 24, 2003 Quick links [video] [audio] [extras] [overall] The Film David Cross has become more popular in the last year due to his television show on HBO called Mr. Show and his several movie appearances. His Sub-Pop Records debut CD dropped jaws and won himself a reputation of being a very dangerously funny individual. Cross spits in the eye of the popular majority or the otherwise "willfully ignorant" people in America and calls them out on stage without any restraint. Some individuals may think David Cross is an insincere, rude, and unrestrained person that speaks his mind without a care of whom he may offend. Cross discusses everything from the tyranny of the Catholic Church to the child-like antics of George W. Bush and his cabinet members. His incredibly animated live presence has earned him a grand comparison to the comic genius of Bill Hicks.

In a world brimming with page-two absurdities like a religious group sending letters to Marines stationed in Iraq asking them to pray for President Bush, Cross ably ferrets out the hypocritical thought patterns and excoriates them with delight. He finished his winning set with a karaoke deconstruction of Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the U.S.A." that culminated with the sound of God having sex with Princess Diana. Extractions: A: The reason why is that I'm not interested. You're absolutely right. For me, it's not even worth discussion. It doesn't interest me. It interests me only to be discarded. If I start there, I'm mired in a discussion that is very unfruitful to me. I'm simply a non-believer and have been forever. To discuss religion is to put me in a debate with myself. I'm interested in saying, "Let us discuss the existential question. We are all going to die, that is the end of all consciousness. There is no afterlife. There is no God. Now what do we do." That's the point where it starts getting interesting to me. If I have to go back and say, "What if there is a God?" then I'm doing a debate that is not very interesting. You have to create one character who believes and another that doesn't. It's not an issue.

Extractions: David Cross Its Not Funny was recorded in January of 2004 during four nights of stand up in Washington DC. Throughout the 73 minutes of his stand-up, Cross never sounds like he is doing a bit. The clear spoken, sharp tongue comedian seamlessly jumps from topic to topic without missing a beat. Cross constant barrage of jokes and humorous insights touch on subjects as varied as a certain reality television show and politics to fancy restaurants and religion; Cross even finds time to take a couple of well aimed shots at George Bushs new found comedic mouthpiece Dennis Miller, and the lead singer of "the third worst band in history" Scott Stapp. Cross spends a large part of the album loudly speaking from the far left with his comedic insights and opinions on George Bush and his war. With each of Cross profanity laced punch lines directed at the President and his cronies, the Washington DC audience surprisingly claps and cheers in agreement. It is extremely encouraging to hear a comedian who just tells jokes and doesnt preach and pander to an audience. Even though Cross is anti-Bush, he wisely doesnt jam his political views down the throats of his audience. The great thing about David Cross new album is that as a hip comedian, Cross brings a refreshing feel to a genre that has almost gone completely stale due to the proliferation of comedy albums from former SNL cast members and other lowlifes that are just not funny outside of the realm of a three minute television skit.

Extractions: IN THE LATE-'90s a Monty Python-esque sketch comedy show that was as intelligent as it was humorous began airing on HBO. Mr Show was the brainchild of Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. After 30 episodes Odenkirk and Cross ended the show, citing exhaustion and a poor time slot. Since then Cross has guest starred on a myriad of TV shows, toured as a stand-up comedian, had an HBO special, and released a comedy album (Shut Up You Stupid Fucking Baby) that has become a road trip staple. More recently, he put out a behind-the-scenes tour DVD for his stand-up act, while also landing a recurring role on the surprisingly funny Arrested Development on FOX. Up next, Cross will record another comedy album for Sub Pop. Were you surprised by the reaction to the tour DVD?

Extractions: Well, what can we say about David Cross? If youre not familiar with him by now, youve got a lot of catching up to do, so Im not going to even try. I saw him and Bob Odenkirk on the Jimmy Kimmel show two nights ago, and it just served to remind me that theyre a couple of the funniest people on earth. This is the second time I have had the chance to interview David Cross, and I dont think either time was a great interview. Some of the reasons for that are talked about in this interview, but I think the bigger stumbling block is myself, and the fact that I feel intimidated interviewing him. I think I would feel the same way interviewing George Carlin, or Richard Pryor, or even Bob Odenkirk. I have too much respect, reverence, and, yes, maybe even love for their work not to feel intimidated. Mr. Show, to me, is on par with Monty Pythons Flying Circus for me, as far as overall hilarity, inventiveness, and (for what its worth) influence. So maybe I sort of blew it. Oh well. Who cares? Enjoy.
