Extractions: Ronald Colman (1891-1958) Romantic lead Ronald Colman was a hero to millions of women, who sighed over him for decades. Born in Richmond, England on February 9th, 1891, and orphaned at age sixteen, Ronald obtained employment with a British steamship company as a young lad. He served, and was wounded in World War One, and upon returning to England he decided to become an actor. In 1918 he starred in a play called "Damaged Goods" in London, and this lead to film work. He played bit parts until he got his first big break in a successful British film "The Black Spider" (1920), but an economic decline in England's film industry at the time made Hollywood seem a more lucrative option for success. He moved to Hollywood, where he caught the attention of actress Lillian Gish , who picked him as her co-star in the dramatic "The White Sister" (1923). One of the most popular silent movie actors, Colman found further success playing opposite popular silent female leads, such as Vilma Banky in "The Dark Angel" (1925) and "The Winning of Barbara Worth" (1926), and

Extractions: Menu=''; document.write(Menu); James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon proposes a perfect hidden community within the uncharted Himalayas, a land where peace reigns and the inhabitants live for hundreds of years. So indelible is this mythical land that its name has entered the culture: Shangri-La. Director Frank Capra, riding high during his mid-'30s hot streak, spared no expense in creating Hilton's paradise onscreen, taxing the coffers of Columbia Pictures and the patience of mogul Harry Cohn. The results, however, are magical: shimmering, seductive, and maybe a bit foolish, truly the creation of an idealist (understandably, the spectacular art direction won an Oscar). And Capra's hero is an idealist, too. Ronald Colman, at his most marvelously elocutionary, plays a wise diplomat whose plane crashes in the snows of... Learn More I first saw Ronald Colman in the 1937 film "Lost Horizon" and I was immediately impressed with his acting ability, primarily his use of subtlety and gesture. His type of acting is extremely rare by todays standards, where the stories are more likely to contain rapid, complex camera shots and special effects to propel the plot. But back in the Silver Screen era it was all about a tight script and excellent acting. That is what we have here, with a particularly potent performance given by the star Ronald Colman. His performance garnered the 1947 Oscar for Best Actor, and many said it was a long time coming. The story is about a stage actor content to play comic leads when he is offered the lead role in Shakespear's "Othello." He is reluctant to play the part due to a subconcious realization...
