I didn't know the man, but many of the films in which he appeared meant something to me. His appeal was deeper than race or gender; his appeal was from the heart. And that heart is now broken. Followers of international cinema may recognize him from Chen Kaige's FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE (the hotheaded opera star) or Wong Kar-Wai's HAPPY TOGETHER (the unhappily moody partner of Tony Leung Chiu-Wai). At the time Cheung was known more for being a pop star than for his acting. He was born in September 1956 in Hong Kong. Educated abroad, he returned home in the late 1970s and won acclaim in a singing contest. Shortly thereafter he released his first album, and by all reports he was a dynamic, often outrageous performer in concert. Cheung appeared again with Chow Yun Fat in John Woo's ONCE A THIEF in 1991. Once again he played a younger brother with resentment issues. The role was not terribly substantial, but Cheung certainly looked the part of a suave international thief. If you recognize Ronny Yu's name as the director of last year's FORMULA 51 (or the minor horror fan fave BRIDE OF CHUCKY), it may be a shock to know that he directed the stormy epic THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR. It's a fantasy film that cannot be explained; it must be experienced. At heart, it's a love story between Brigitte Lin Ching-Hsia and Leslie Cheung. The two leads are heartwarming as they open up emotionally to one another, elegantly erotic when they become lovers, and heartbreaking when one betrays the other. Even as the dazzling visuals swamp the viewer's head, the film works because of the relationship of the two lovers.

I tried to explain it to someone by saying, "This is like Tom Cruise killing himself," but that didn't work. Leslie wasn't Tom Cruise, he was Leslie. He probably had something catty to say about Tom Cruise, anyways: he'd resent the comparison. I first saw him in DAYS OF BEING WILD playing a teddy boy, breaking hearts and acting like a cad until his tragic end on a train in the Philippines as the lush green jungle rushed by. It was a gorgeous performance. It was theatrical, full of dramatic entrances and a final, flourishing exit. It was unforgettable. A few days later I saw him in ASHES OF TIME playing a swordsman crushed beneath a lifetime of regrets, his face a wry and rueful mask, occasionally cracking to pour forth a flood of self-loathing. It was another great performance and I learned fast that Leslie Cheung was always good. Even if the movie stunk, Leslie had too much pride to let himself look bad.

Farewell My Concubine saw him rise to international fame as the film was a worldwide art house success.

Instead, he finds redemption and love as the dead girlfriend forgives Jim and morphs into Yan. The two huddle in each other's arms as the sun rises. In a bizarre case of art imitating life, the ending was not so happy for the 46-year-old Leslie Cheung. On the evening of 1 April, he leapt to his death from the 24th floor of Hong Kong's Mandarin Oriental Hotel. A note found on his body hinted that he was suffering from depression. "In my life, I have done nothing wrong," he wrote. "Why does it have to be like this?" The news of Cheung's death swept through Asia quickly. Fans in Hong Kong, where was born in 1956, were particularly stunned. "I would have prayed for you if I knew you were in so much pain," wrote one on the sidewalk near the death scene.
