New research into Chase's personal life and the locations of his urban landscapes has revealed the significance of these paintings. The exhibition will be on view at the Brooklyn Museum of Art from May 26 through August 13, 2000. it will travel to The Art Institute of Chicago (September 7-November 26, 2000) and to The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (December 13, 2000-March 11, 2001). (left: In the Studio , BMA) The thirty-five paintings and pastels in the exhibition mark a pivotal period in Chase's career and in American art history. The works are the first significant studies of American landscape executed in the Impressionist technique. These landscapes led Chase to a breakthrough in his painting career and the renewed acclaim of American art critics. The works feature scenes of Brooklyn's Prospect and Tompkins Parks, Central Park, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Gowanus Bay, Bath Beach, and the painter's family backyard in Brooklyn. William Merritt Chase: Modern American Landscapes brings together more than 30 major paintings that span a brief but formative period (1886-1893) in Chase's career and represent the artist's first serious foray into an intense exploration of the American urban landscape. Painted mainly in the New York City boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn, these airy, light-filled canvases also helped establish Chase's reputation as the foremost Impressionist in the United States as well as the "inventor" of the American park subject. Ireland, 1968.88) William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) was one of the first American painters to document turn-of-the-century urban life in the public spaces devoted to leisure activities. Chase was, in fact, one of the most prominent artists in the United States around the turn of the 20th century. Celebrated for his expertise in a variety of styles and media, Chase applied his considerable technical talents to an equally wide range of genres portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. In 1886, he began to depict views of the public parks and harbors of Brooklyn and Manhattan, utilizing methods clearly inspired by French Impressionism, only to abandon these urban subjects in the early 1890s as abruptly as he had adopted them.

Dating from 1886 to 1893, these major works represent Chase's first serious exploration of the American landscape and have helped to establish his reputation as a pioneer Impressionist in the United States and the "inventor" of the park as subject matter. A completely modern artist, he aligned himself with advanced European art by adapting and "Americanizing" compositional treatments of space preferred by such artists as Edgar Degas and Gustave Caillebotte. The exhibition and accompanying catalogue will invite audiences to consider their own reactions to and use of the city park by relating Chase's unique vision to the efforts of late 19th- and early 20th-century city planners to use park spaces to revitalize the urban landscape. The Art Institute of Chicago's presentation will further explore this fascinating aspect with an innovative introductory gallery using artworks from the museum's own wide-ranging collection. This takes the museum's VC collection to four. ( A further group of 2nd Boer War / World War One medals awarded to Richard Chase, William's brother, were also donated to the Army Museum. ( see below ) ). William Chase was born on the 2nd July 1856 at St Lucia, West Indies, eldest son of Captain R.H. Chase and Susan Ifill, daughter of John Buhott. He was educated privately and entered the Army in September 1875, being gazetted to Her Majesty's 15th Foot. He did duty with the Headquarters of his regiment in India for two years, passed with distinction the necessary examinations, and was admitted to the Bombay Staff Corps. In the Second Afghan War of 1878-1880, Chase served with the 28th Bombay Native Infantry, a constituent of the Kandahar Field Force. He was present with his regiment throughout the defence of Kandahar, and took part with the four companies in the ill-fated sortie to the village of Deh Khoja where the casualties of the regiment included Lt-Colonel Newport and thirty rank and file killed, and Lt-Colonel Nimmo and twenty rank and file wounded. In a letter, the late Lt-Colonel Daubeny of the 7th Fusiliers wrote:

    Extractions: William Merritt Chase was born in Williamsburg (later Ninevah), Indiana, in 1849, the oldest of six children. When he was twelve, the family moved to Indianapolis. His father hoped that he would follow him into the women's shoe business, but Chase, who said "the desire to draw was born in me," resisted his father's commercial ambitions for his own artistic ones. In 1867 he began his training with Barton S. Hays, followed two years later with study at the National Academy of Design in New York under Lemuel P. Wilmarth. In 1886 he married Alice Gerson, who was frequently his model, as were their many children. Chase painted a wide range of subjects, including figures, landscapes and cityscapes, studio interiors, still lifes, and, increasingly later in life, portraits, and he worked with equal brilliance in oil and pastel.
