So who is? Well, if the folks we see in the front row of her concert videos are typical, Carey's fan base has always consisted of teenage girls who want to be her and teenage boys who want to be with her. And those dependable supporters are who she's targetting again with both barrels on her comeback album Charmbracelet. That's hardly a surprise. After all the turmoil of the past couple of years a divorce, a record-label change, a universally panned movie and album, and that very, very public meltdown it's no wonder Mariah has retreated to a safe haven on this 15-song effort. But after listening to yet another bland collection of silky, overblown ballads and forgettable featherweight hip-hop, it's hard not to wonder if she's playing it too safe. And after listening to her oohing and aahing and cooing and moaning and humming and squeaking and twittering and sighing for a solid hour like a cross between an angel, an exotic bird and a hooker, it's hard not to wonder about something else: Whether or not she's playing with a full deck.

A special guy "brightens up the moon and stars" on "Yours." Gangsta bravado and materialism intrude on several cuts as guest rappers boast, "Divas like thugs too ... Gangsta love is irresistible" ("Irresistible") and "I’m a mobsta and a pimp" ("Boy"). Another says Mariah is his dream girl, though his taste usually gravitates to groupies ("You Got Me"). Turns out Glitter, along with being her first album in a multi-gazillion-dollar deal with Virgin and the soundtrack to the upcoming film of the same name, is also a first for Carey, at least as far as we're concerned: It's an album we can sit through without rolling our eyes, gritting our teeth and praying for the sweet caress of death (or at least temporary deafness). In fact, listening to Glitter is - and we're as shocked as anybody to be saying this - an enjoyable experience. And one that we have even repeated, alone, late at night, in our home. Oh, we feel so dirty.

"Don’t Stop (Funkin’ 4 Jamaica)," "Loverboy Remix" and "If We" get smoked by recreational drug use. "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life" celebrates ogling women and sipping alcohol. A line on "Reflections (Care Enough)" seems to prefer abortion to emotional abandonment after birth. "Lead the Way," "Want You," "All My Life" and "Loverboy Remix" articulate Carey’s sexual desires with lusty, occasionally descriptive language. Based on this soundtrack, one might think the golden-throated pop star has dreams of becoming Janet Jackson. Carey’s stylistic shift in that direction continues. Meanwhile, her lyrics keep getting racier. Sexual exploits. Mild profanity. Marijuana. Carey lets her guests voice the most troublesome lines, but she’s still ultimately responsible for

So is it a weak album, a good soundtrack or something else? The first impression is simple. Mariah surrounds herself with dozens of unnecessary rappers that make this release confusing of what it's supposed to be. From the catchy first single, "Loverboy," through a couple of big ballads and a few funky tunes thrown in for a good mix, the album lacks some kind of excitement. Here's a track-by-track review: Loverboy Remix featuring Da Brat, Ludacris, Twenty II, Shawnna The version of the song that was not included on the UK single is slightly better than the radio edit, however not especially different.
