In addition to the TV exec, PacifiCare Health Systems CEO Howie Phanstiel was honored. Alias star Jennifer Garner hosted the event that awarded the two for their positive work and influence in the community. I feel extremely honored, Bowser said before receiving the honor, and I also feel extremely connected to the organization because its an organization that adopts a class of inner city kids and helps to fuel their dreams and having been an inner city child myself I really have a deep appreciation for that purpose. Furthermore, Bowser said that as a beneficiary of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, it is not necessarily his theme of I Have A Dream, that drove her to her success. He spoke about how we cannot walk alone, in a part of his I Have A Dream speech, which a lot of people are familiar with a phrase thats embedded in his speech that people dont necessarily grasp on to. They just grasp onto the theme I Have A Dream. But in the middle of the speech is the phrase we cannot walk alone, and I have come from the inner city to a place of happiness and success, but because I did not walk here alone.

Tuned In: Networks Scramble To Add Minority Characters Executives from The WB came prepared yesterday, announcing plans for a new serieswith yvette lee bowser, creator of Living Single and For Your Love http://www.post-gazette.com/tv/19990721owen2.asp
Extractions: Tuned In: Networks scramble to add minority characters Wednesday, July 21, 1999 By Rob Owen , Post-Gazette TV Editor PASADENA, Calif. Every year the networks film pilot episodes, or short presentations for new series. And every year the networks play a shell game afterwards, replacing actors here, rethinking characters there. This year there's been more of that than usual, perhaps due in part to the uproar over the small number of minority characters in the original pilots. "A lot of producers did some scrambling in the past few weeks," said Jonathan Prince, executive producer of UPN's interracial sitcom "Grown Ups." "That's OK, make 'em scramble." Possibly the most obvious example of such rethinking can be found in The WB's "Safe Harbor," a family drama from the creator of "7th Heaven." Gregory Harrison plays a widower with two teen sons and a younger set of twins. At least, they used to be twins. The twins have been recast as 12-year-old best friends who think of themselves as "cosmic twins" because they were born on the same day in the same town. And now one of them is played by an African-American actor. ABC's "Wasteland" and "Then Came You" will get new black characters, as will Fox's "Manchester Prep."

Still going after those paranormal buffs, both of the new dramas have a supernatural bent. Can they hold on to the audiences that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Enterprise" will initially provide? The one comedy addition, "Half and Half," is a tale of two completely different half-sisters. However, if it doesn't stick (or any of the other Monday night comedies start to slide), expect it to be replaced midseason with the waiting-in-the-wings "Abby." However, Parsons is a remarkable contrast to the Hilary Banks character she portrayed for six seasons. Conversely, Parsons is incredibly down-to-earth, smart, talented and focused. In recent years Parsons, who grew up in Santa Monica, Calif., traded-in her L.A. lifestyle and moved to the Big Apple. "I just prefer living in New York. There's a far more human factor. You encounter so many different people and there's a different dynamic between the people. In L.A. it's hard to know how much of your agenda is really your own, how much are your thoughts and ideas and not what's just best for Hollywood. I feel so much freedom in New York, whoever you are, you are ok here."

Getting Personal: The Systemic Nature Of The "Black" Sitcom Genre Many have found commercial success including Debbie Allen, KeenanIvory Wayans, Martin Lawrence, and yvette lee bowser. Although http://www.filmstudies.ucsb.edu/faculty/everett/news_letter/vol2iss23/art_burton
Extractions: "Black" Sitcom Genre by Nsenga K. Burton Julia (1968) to Sanford and Son (1971) to The Cosby Show (1984) , sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. In recent years, there has been an onslaught of "black" sitcoms appearing on commercial television largely due to the success of The Cosby Show and the mass appeal of urban culture. Not only are African-Americans cast in roles in sitcoms, but some have also been hired as executive producers, producers, and writers. Many have found commercial success including Debbie Allen, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Martin Lawrence, and Yvette Lee Bowser. Although African-Americans have attained some level of success in the television sitcom genre, the fact remains that images of African-Americans in these sitcoms are still questionable, and have led many to believe that we have returned to the age of minstrelsy. Simple logic should dictate that with more African-Americans in positions of power on these particular shows, African-American images and story lines should improve, but obviously this is not the case. It is my assertion that because of the systemic nature of the television industry, it is improbable that African-Americans can look to television sitcoms for more acceptable images and characterizations of themselves. "Black" sitcoms are being carried on a variety of commercial networks. The two fledgling upstarts, United Paramount Network (UPN) and The Warner Brothers Network (WB) showcase so many "black" sitcoms that they have been dubbed the "Us People Network" and the "We Black" Network by network viewers. However, it is not these two networks that most interest me, but it is the Fox network that has literally become a power player in the commercial television business largely due to the success of innovative programming including "black" sitcoms like
