Extractions: Why don't somebody print the truth about our present economic condition? We spent years of wild buying on credit, everything under the sun, whether we needed it or not, and now we are having to pay for it, howling like a pet coon. This would be a great world to dance in if we didn't have to pay the fiddler. The Best of Will Rogers

Extractions: Of having discovered sodium. A Clerihew by E. Clerihew Bentley, age 16, in science class Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) wrote detective fiction, and at the age of 16, I imagine a bit bored in school, developed the verse form named after him - the clerihew. G. K. Chesterton, Bentley's friend from childhood, helps popularize the form. Bentley collected Clerihews into his 1905 Biography For Beginners, (illustrated by Chesterton) in which he explained the concept of the book with a Clerihew variant: The Art of Biography But Biography is about Chaps. Following this publication, CLERIHEW became a recognized form of verse. Because it uses a proper name at the end of the first line (or sometimes second), it is pseudo-biographical, usually with the emphasis on the "pseudo. " Michael Curl offers this Clerihew on the form's inventor: E. C. Bentley

Extractions: On 1 October, Dr. William Slights began his presentation on the origins of hypertext by talking of his recent visit to the Yale University Archives. He visited Yale to examine single pages of elaborate medical plates which dated from about 1538 through the early 1700s. These fugitive sheets are intricate and interactive: that is, they have tabs and joints which may be manipulated or removed to expose underlying layers. It is not, in Dr. Slights mind (and in my own, afterwards), so far a jump as we may think from these early modern plates to our modern hypertext electronic documents. One example Dr. Slights discussed was Andreas Veslius The Anatomy of the Human Body published in 1543. This book showcased plates designed to teach medical professionals the different parts of the body: internal organs, bone structure, major arteries, and so on. The research for the book was done in part by active (or live) dissection, for which the corpses from the gallows were used.
