Extractions: It's Just a Broadway Birthday I had a dream. The dream was to gather theater lovers from all over the world and build a webzine (internet magazine) that would be written by fans, for fans. And that dream has come true. Exactly one year ago today, January 31, 1997, Talkin' Broadway made it's debut on the web. It seems like only yesterday that the duo of Mark Bakalor and V.J. were up at all hours getting ready for opening night. It's been a great year and the staff has grown considerably so we're going to reflect a bit here and give our thanks to all those involved. When the "reviews" came out, the press was pretty nice to us, so a special thanks to The New York Times, Newsday, MsNBC, and all the "Yahoos" at Ziff Davis publishing. Can't forget Chris Haines at the "Tony Website" or our friends at BC/EFA, Suite 101 and Look Smart. It is my goal to take Talkin' Broadway even further in the next year with new features and columns written by theater fans throughout the world. Originally, it was just me doing the writing and Mark Bakalor doing the web design but all that has changed in the last year. Talkin' Broadway will always be a fan based website so allow me to introduce the staff. Mark Bakalor - Mark is the designer in charge of the look of every graphic and page on the site. He also maintains the "All That Chat" forum. Without Mark, there would be no Talkin' Broadway.
Extractions: With all the Tony fever lately coupled with being in Las Vegas for the last few weeks, I had to get away and see a show. I'm heading to New York in two weeks and I'll stay there for a while, so I'll see plenty of shows. But, I still had to do something about my urge to see some good live theatre. So, I hopped on a plane and flew to San Jose and caught San Jose State University's production of City of Angels . Whoah! You're thinking, this ain't Broadway, it's just some college production, right? We all remember our college days and those "so-so" productions. I'm tellin' you, it wasn't Broadway, but it came damn close! The five time Tony Award winning musical with music by Cy Coleman ( The Life ) and lyrics by David Zippel was given a first class treatment by this energetic and gifted collegiate cast. I thought I was in for an amateur afternoon when I noticed a few orchestra members arriving one minute before curtain, obviously rushing from classes. However, to my surprise, this group of seventeen musicians were in fine form under the baton of Barbara Day Turner. Barbara also conducts San Jose Opera and American Musical Theatre of San Jose, to name a few. This spoof of the private eye films of the 1940's profiles Stine (Corey Rickrode), a writer of detective fiction, adapting his novel about the detective Stone (Coby Bell) into a screenplay. The lyrics are clever and Larry Gelbart's (

ISLA VISTA FEST REPORT mark bakalor tells me that Drinking beer is like She s mark bakalor sgrandmother, but never once does she mention drinking beer. http://www.juggling.org/publications/two-ply-press/may_95/islavist.html
Extractions: I arrive at the 19th annual Isla Vista Fest on Saturday. It's put on this year by the UCSB Juggling Club. It's in full swing. Scores of jugglers are in the park juggling, talking, doing the "Fest thing." Ben Schoenberg and the Renegades sell props. It's late afternoon. This is the way life should be... I see Steve and Michelle Gerdes, Carolyn and Mike Hatalski, Cliff Spenger, Bruno Saxer and Susie Williams. Dan Bennnett is doing amazing tricks. Mark Nizer hangs for a while. Conversations start... Suddenly we're on "Festival Time." The minutes disappear like socks in a laundrymat. I look at my watch. It's late and the park is clearing... I walk over to the theater for the public show and run into Kim Johnes and her boyfriend Emilio who learned how to eat fire last year. He still has no facial hair. I go inside and see the Bakalor family setting up for the show. Mark Bakalor tells me that "Drinking beer is like... drinking beer." They work on sound, lights and cues. Dan Holzman is there. So is Dan Bennett and Mark Nizer. Someone hands me a piece of paper. I am in charge of the show order. I feel important. I grab Bob Mendelshon and ask him about the acts I don't know. We decide on an order together with advice from Barry Bakalor. It's become a group thing. We all feel important. I bash on Nizer for not being in the show. Nizer bashes on me for not being in the show. Nizer and I bash on Holzman for always being in the show. It's a good line-up.
Juniors Championship The youngest competitor of all, 9year-old mark bakalor, won the hearts of the audienceand judges with his steady grin, knickers and spangled red bows on his http://www.juggling.org/jw/86/3/juniors.html
Extractions: Robbie Weinstein, Juniors Championship winner Robbie Weinstein took his best shot in his last chance to compete as an IJA junior, and won the event with the polish that comes from six years of practice. Weinstein finished second in the event in 1985, and at age 17 this was his last year of Juniors eligibility. The Albuquerque, N.M., high school student opened with a ball routine that culminated with a five ball drop bounce switch to a force bounce. He did color changes in a five ring cascade, then flashed six rings. He did three club tricks, a four club shower and finished with a five club cascade. Youth took second and third places. Oran Canfield , 12, from Berkeley, Calif., unicycled onto stage as a paper boy, juggling three rolled-up editions. The beat of a rap song signalled a switch in the routine that led him to some break dancing and three and four club work. Smiling and apparently at ease all the time, he juggled up to five balls, five rings and the diabolo. The youngest competitor of all
