Extractions: In the calm before an incoming storm, the Yardley family settles down for a nice dinner. Little do they know that just outside sits Karl Hochman, AKA The Address Book killer. His M.O. is this: he steals an address book and harasses the owner while systematically murdering everyone listed inside. The Yardleys were the final stop on Karl's current murder tour, but luckily it's not long before he finds another victim. Terry Monroe forgets her address book at the computer store where Karl works. He quickly pockets it and heads out to dispose of the first entry, but while driving to the victim's house he's involved in a horrible accident that nearly takes his life. Rushed to the hospital, a power surge while he's being X-rayed kills his body but somehow sends his consciousness soaring into cyberspace. Science is crazy like that. Karl begins scouring the internet and retrieving any information he can on the Monroe family. Bram Walker, a computer expert, stumbles upon the electric investigation and sets out to help, thinking it nothing more than the work of an angry hacker. But when Terry's friends begin dying off in the same order they were listed in the address book, it seems there's something else going on. Theresa stumbles upon the truth first, and her son Josh and Bram are not far behind. Together they form some grandiose scheme involving magnets and cheesy CGI animation to "erase" Karl forever.

Extractions: I was but a wee Metro when this film first came out, and macabre juvenile that I was, I loved it. In fact, I distinctly remember seeing this in the theatre at least three times. So when I stumbled across a bargain-bin video edition recently, I shelled out the five bones to re-live a bit of my childhood. Would the film live up to the legendary status my young mind had built it up to? The premise is this: Fool, who lives with his ailing mom and his promiscuous sister in a ghetto tenement building, is talked into assisting in a robbery by Big Black Leroy and his Little Cracker Companion Spenser. Their target is the family that owns the building, as well as half of the real estate in their neighborhood. Word on the street is that the family is housing a king's ransom in gold coins, and Leroy wants his cut of the bounty. The three of them break into the house and are assaulted by a homicidal housewife, a sadomasochistic husband, a blood thirsty pooch, a veritable barrage of booby traps, and of course the people under the stairs. Fool finds the money, all right, but comes to discover that he can't get out. Nobody has ever got out.

Extractions: A boy breaks into a large house only to discover the owners aren't who they were thought to be. COMMENTS I love this movie! I'm not a big Wes Craven fan, but this is one of his movie that I really enjoy. I remember watching it when I was younger and really liking it, so when it came out on DVD I knew I had to get it. The story is about a couple crooks and a young boy (Brandon Adams), who all live in the ghetto. They decide to rob the landlord's house after hearing they keep a large stash of gold somewhere inside. One of the crooks disguised as a meter-reader enters the house in hopes of scoping out the security. The landlords eventually leave the house for a bit, which confuses the other crook (Ving Rhames) and boy, because their partner was left inside. The two thinking the other guy might have found the gold and left with it already decide to break into the house themselves, but soon discover the other guy dead and that the landlords have not only returned, but have locked down the house. What I've always enjoyed about this movie was the variety of different things it would offer. It didn't just focus on the "people under the stairs," but also the weird landlords and their home that has so much security it could substitute as a prison. It also had a decent story, with the theme of stealing from the rich to give to the poor. Sure the movie isn't really good for scares, but hell if it isn't entertaining. It's also rare to see such a young lead in a rated-R horror flick now-a-days.

Extractions: Opens new window on Amazon The People Under The Stairs DVD ( October, 2003) Rating: (4 of 5) This film was written and directed by master horror director Wes Craven. In it Dexter, who friends call Fool, lives in poverty, with his sick mother. A few of his older "friends" tell him the only way they can get some money is to steal it. So he goes with them to a house of two rich people who own all the homes in the ghetto where Dexter lives. But when they arrive they find out how sick these two are. The house has a full lock and electrical system to trap them inside. There have been dozens of people trapped inside for a long time. They are kept under the stairs. Can Dexter survive, and save the young girl Alice, as well as the people under the stairs? This film reminds me a lot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, as how people come to a house, only to be met by a crazy murderous family. While Texas is more serious, and scarier, this film is very campy, and has a lot of funny moments. Wes Craven surely knows how to direct a horror film, as he does here. If your a fan of horror, or camp, I'd recommend this. You should definitely watch with friends, as you will be laughing a lot. To most other people, who are annoyed by B movies, don't watch this. 4 stars because the direction is great, and there are a lot of funny moments, as a lot of the stuff in this film is kinda unrealistic.
