Box 30001 Las Cruces, NM 88003 dwidger@nmsu.edu The past few months have been busy ones for the Alumni Association, with chapter events, football games, picnics and homecoming preparations. All of these activities are always fun, but truly make the time pass very quickly. California Bay Area Alumni Reception - Aug. 27, 1998 President and Mrs. Conroy, Vice President for University Advancement Marcia Muller and myself were in Santa Clara for one of the best alumni receptions in that area in some time. Jack Burleson, '44, along with Bill Wunsch, '46, planned the fun evening. We had alumni ranging from the 1940s to 1995. Graduates had a great time telling their tales of the campus during their time. Everyone is ready to get the Bay Area Alumni Chapter back to 100 attendees. Active members are thinking about fun activities that will draw Aggies. I am looking forward to what they come up with. Door prizes are always a hit, but this year I had a few of the "Friends Don't Let Friends Go To UNM" shirts left. Those I had left in the office were ordered that night. I wish I had more, but unfortunately the story from the printer is UNM won't let us print these anymore. Well, they were fun while they lasted.

Extractions: General By Tony Jackson, Post staff reporter MONTREAL - Emotion was noticeably absent from the Reds clubhouse late Sunday afternoon. Truth be told, that is probably a good thing. Tonight Reds (Scott Williamson 3-7) vs. New York Mets (Glendon Rusch 7-7). WLW-AM (700). Fox Sports Net. There was no elation over a three-game sweep of the Montreal Expos, completed only moments earlier with a 7-4 victory before 14,495. There was no excitement over the fact that the second-place Reds had pulled within four games of St. Louis in the National League Central - the closest they have been since June 13 - after the Cardinals lost again at New York. There was no frustration over the fact that even with baseball's trading deadline looming at 4 p.m. today, general manager Jim Bowden still had not made a significant move to improve the club. And there was no sadness over the outside chance that this might have been the Reds' final visit to the mausoleum known as Olympic Stadium, built specifically for the 1976 Summer Games but converted immediately afterward into a ballpark that no one seems to patronize anymore, which is precisely the reason the Expos might be leaving after this season for some baseball-starved paradise in North Carolina or Virginia or Florida or wherever. Instead, on the part of the Reds, there was only a sense of overwhelming calm. Poker-faced men changing from baseball uniforms to suits and ties for a charter flight that would take them to New York, where they will begin a three-game series tonight, and where they will focus not on the Cardinals, whom they are chasing, but on the Mets, whom they are playing. Business as usual.

Extractions: Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO >> Last week in St. Louis, rookie Jerome Williams begged his teammates to share any secrets on how to shut down Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols. San Francisco pitching coach Dave Righetti made it simple: "Challenge him." Williams pitched his second complete game of the year in his eighth major league start, stumping Pujols and the rest of the St. Louis lineup and leading the Giants to a 5-1 victory last night. The right-hander (4-1) won his fourth straight, allowing seven hits, striking out four, walking one and throwing 127 pitches. Williams' last two victories have come against the Cardinals and he has held Pujols hitless in seven at-bats in those two games. "When I came into St. Louis, he had a .380-something average," Williams said. "I said, 'I'm going to face this guy,' and I was asking everybody in the clubhouse, 'What should I do?' "
