Among the special guests were the daughters of Col. McCarthy (well respected Red Canyon commander) and grandchildren of (at the time) Captain Mendheim. Don Bogges (co-organizer) had developed heart trouble and had emergency heart surgery the previous week, and was not able to attend.

Chapter 14 Chapter 2 How to Get to Trinity Site. rinity Site, where the world's first atomic bomb was exploded in 1945, is normally open to the public twice a yearon the first Saturday in April and October. Trinity is located on the northern end of the 3,200-square-mile White Sands Missile Range, N.M., between the towns of Carrizozo and Socorro, N.M. There are two ways of entering the restricted missile range on tour days. Visitors can enter through the range's Stallion Range Center which is five miles south of Highway 380. The turnoff is 12 miles east of San Antonio, N.M. , and 53 miles west of Carrizozo, N.M. The Stallion gate will be open 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Visitors arriving at the gate between those hours will receive handouts and will be allowed to drive unescorted the 17 miles to Trinity Site. The road is paved and marked. The other way of entering the missile range is by travelling with a caravan sponsored by the Alamogordo (N.M.) Chamber of Commerce. The caravan forms at the Otero County Fairgrounds in Alamogordo and leaves at 8 a.m. Visitors entering this way will travel as an escorted group with military police to and from Trinity Site. The drive is 170 miles round trip. There are no service station facilities on the missile range. The caravan is scheduled to leave Trinity Site at 12:30 p.m. for the return to Alamogordo. The caravan may leave later if there is a large number of vehicles in the returning caravan.

Liftoff of the experimental NASA-McDonnell Douglas Clipper Graham launch vehicle is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. MDT. "Just as in an aircraft test program, each successive test flight of the Clipper Graham is more complicated and allows us to evaluate vehicle performance under the dynamic conditions of flight," said David Schweikle, program manager of the Delta Clipper-Experimental Advanced (DC-XA) program. Maximum altitude will be 4,100 feet during the 2-minute, 20-second flight. The 43-foot-high rocket will travel laterally 2,800 feet. During Wednesday's flight the rocket's nose will make a sweeping arc as it rotates from a near upright position. By performing a high-angle of attack, 50-degree sweep, engineers will be able to evaluate dynamic forces on the test vehicle. Under a cooperative agreement with NASA, McDonnell Douglas integrated advanced technology components into the vertical-takeoff, vertical-landing rocket.

"There's three generations of Marlins that have been out here," said Monte Marlin, who has worked at the White Sands public affairs office since 1980. "My father-in-law, Joe Marlin, came out here in the early '50s, right after he graduated with a degree in physics from UCLA. I met my husband, David, out here, and our children are now going to school out here. I can't even imagine what my life would've been like had it not been for White Sands." Noble's father, Edward Noble, started at White Sands in 1952. A Noble has worked there ever since.

Extractions: Published 11/24/03 Jim Eckles In the popular Christmas movie "It's a Wonderful Life," James Stewart got the opportunity to see what his community would have been like had he never existed. What might Las Cruces be like today if White Sands Missile Range had never existed? One obvious consequence can be found at New Mexico State University. The Physical Science Laboratory at the school was specifically founded by Dr. George Gardiner to support missions at the missile range and certainly would be an empty space on campus without the range. The lab has since evolved into a world-class facility that dabbles in pursuits as varied as state-of-the-art electronics, modeling and simulation, and high-altitude ballooning. NASA, NMSU benefit Another major organization that would never have been launched without White Sands is the NASA White Sands Test Facility, just east of Las Cruces. NASA was able to piggyback on the White Sands rocket and missile test mission for its own rocket engine testing. Without White Sands and the NASA facility, there would not have been a space shuttle landing in New Mexico nor would there be any effort today to have Southern New Mexico picked as the site for a spaceport.
