Extractions: It's All in the Watershed Web of Life Alexander Shephard (1835-1902) Try to picture Washington, D.C. as a tree-barren town with rolling eroded dirt roads. Add people, horses, and carriages traveling on those dirt roads, kicking up so much dust into the air you had to wear a handkerchief over your mouth in order to keep from inhaling the suspended particles. Try to picture roads and low-lying walking paths turning into impassable mud holes after each rain storm. This may not be a pretty picture but it describes what Washington, D.C. was like after the Civil War. Recuperating from four years of war, the city was, on the one hand, a deserted Union army military camp and, on the other, a growing demographic area of government leaders, prominent citizens, and a substantial population of middle and low-income families. It was at this time that a 36-year-old gentleman, by the name of Alexander Shepherd, was appointed governor of the Territory of Columbia from 1873 to 1874. He led Washington's Board of Public Works in the biggest street-improvement program in local history. "Boss" Shepherd, as he was known, started leveling and improving the streets of Washington. In addition, the city's first sewers were laid as well as gas lines. After about 16 months of almost chaotic construction, Washington gained more than 350 miles of paved streets, 154 miles of curbs, 30 miles of water mains, and more than 3,000 gas street lights.

Extractions: The first homeopathic body in Britain, known as Homeopathic Association, was established in 1836, headed by Lord Robert Grosvenor. The two most important figures in that association were an influential layman, William Leaf (?1804-1874) and Dr. Paul François Curie (1799-1853). In 1837, the association succeeded in opening a dispensary in Finsbury Circus, whilst in 1842 it raised sufficient funds to establish a homeopathic hospital in Hanover Square in London. Dr. Curie was at the head of the hospital. Having reached its main goal, i.e., opening a homeopathic hospital, the association ceased.

Extractions: Polish virologist and immunologist who discovered the first vaccine against poliomyelitis which was based on oral administration of attenuated polio virus. In researching a polio vaccine, he decided to focus on the use of live viruses that were attenuated (rendered non-virulent) instead of the killed viruses that became the basis for the injections created by Jonas Salk. Koprowski viewed the live vaccine as more powerful since it entered the intestinal tract directly and could provide lifelong immunity, whereas the Salk vaccine required boosters. Also, taking a vaccine by mouth is easy, whereas an injection is more expensive and needs medical facilities. It was taken by the first child on 27 Feb 1950 and within 10 years was used for immunization on four continents.

Extractions: The best accounting I have seen for this line of McWhorter is a compilation written by Mabel Woods Hinrichs who made an effort to record actual facts. Contrary to popular belief, Thomas McWhorter was not one of the eleven children of Hugh McWhorter who migrated from Ireland to New Castle DE. All we know of Thomas McWhorter is that he came from Scotland before the French and Indian War and settled in New Jersey. Sometime after 1856 Tyler McWhorter of Mercer Co. IL wrote to Tyler McWhorter living in Whiteside IL saying that he had "an old Bible that my father had in my boyhood. In said old Bible we have Family Record of the McWhorter family and of the Buchanan family in my father's handwriting." In a letter written by Mrs. Hinrichs in 1925, she says in reference to the Thomas McWhorter line, "Our record, on a yellowed bit of paper pasted in an old family bible - "Thomas McWhorter born in Ireland and settled in New Jersey prior to the French War." +1. GILBERT possibly born Ireland; died Orange County NY; married SARAH (unknown). This Sarah probably is one who married second John Armstrong born 10 Nov 1727. His first wife was Polly McWhorter. John Armstrong made a will at Warwick NY dated 6 Jan 1797 which mentioned widow Sarah. Gilbert McWhorter, son of Sarah, administered her estate 20 Jan 1808. A Robert McWhorter was witness to the will of John Armstrong.

Here then is a no doubt incomplete listing of Dunlop Royalty, whether of the Name or descended from it, or married into it. Merito! Dunlop of Dunlop In the 11 th Century, a Norman named De Moreville was deeded Dunlop Hill, by Malcolm II, displacing the Celtic Mormaer whose line had ruled there for ages and were probably of Noble lineage of the Kingdom of Strathclyde. Dom Godfrey de Ross dwelt there for the Morevilles, and was named the Sheriff of Ayr and Kyle during the reign of David II. The Celtic Mormaer was granted lands nearby and appointed Huntsman to the Norman Knight, considered to be a great honor. Due to the politics of the region, De Ross lost his lands supporting the Baliol cause, (including Dunlop Hill) and the Huntsman (Dunlop of Dunlop) regained possession. The following listing refers as far back as records exist for this part of the country. By no means is this a complete listing, as records for the Strathclyde Nobility have not been found. Legends have the Dunlops there as early as 26AD, when Agricola, the Roman general , made his first advance up the west coast. Dunlops of that Ilk Dominus Gulliemus (William) de Dunlop, 1260

Bach was the supreme master of his craft, one whose skill improved throughout his lifetime and who rarely produced any work that was less than superb. Bell was a kind and loving man with an inquisitive temperament, and an outstanding teacher to the deaf. Seen historically, however, he did one great thing: he invented the telephone. He then spent the rest of his life trying to prove his legal and moral right to that accomplishment (a task at which he succeeded), as well as trying to prove that his life had not reached its high point at the age of twenty-nine (a task at which he did not succeed). Born in Scotland on March 3, 1847, Alexander Graham Bell was the son and grandson of prominent elocutionists and speech therapists. Indeed, the Bells and their circle provided the inspiration for George Bernard Shaw's Henry Higgins. Aleck Bell, as he was called, stood as best man to James Murray, the first editor of the
