Extractions: Date: 09 August 2003 Comments: It is thought that Dr. Elder donated the land about 1914. The cemetery Committee was organized in April 1992, mainly to maintain and to organize monthly cleaning bees. Improvements have been made to some of the graves sites. For many of the graves that did not have a headstone, we made one to mark the site. In 1993 we received donations to plant and repair the cemetery. Evergreen trees were planted on two sides and a cotoneaster hedge near the highway. The summer of 2003 a metal gate sign was erected. Volunteers watered the newly planted trees, shrubs and flowers. Since the soil is mainly sand and gravel it is difficult to maintain solid growth. The dry season, the grasshoppers and the gophers are also a problem.

Extractions: OAS_AD('Top'); Donegal-born Men in the The Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) The PRO Kew website in relation to the RIC has this to say about the Royal Irish Constabulary Records: "Despite a series of acts of parliament passed during the eighteenth century, the Irish police force at the time of the Act of Union of 1800 was still composed only of small groups of sub-constables. These part-time policemen, appointed by the local authorities - the grand juries - were few in number and poorly paid out of the county funds. The passage of the Irish (Constabulary (Ireland)) Act 1836 finally brought a single, unified force into being. Power to appoint and discharge members of the force, to make rules and to fix salaries was vested in the lord lieutenant of Ireland. The Irish Constabulary thus created was responsible for the peace of the whole country with the exception of Dublin which retained its own police, the Dublin Metropolitan Police, formed in 1786. Operationally, the Constabulary came under the command of an inspector-general who maintained close contact with the Chief Secretary's Office; to that Office were referred all major questions concerning the control, distribution and discipline of the force. In September 1867, in recognition of its loyal and faithful services, the Constabulary was renamed the Royal Irish Constabulary. The duties of the Constabulary were gradually extended. At first it was solely concerned with keeping the peace, a duty which could entail the suppression of armed rebellion, sectarian riots or agrarian disturbances; later it inherited the functions of the Revenue Police, made inquiries on behalf of departments of state, collected agricultural statistics, enforced the fishery laws and performed a variety of duties under the laws relating to food and drugs, weights and measures, explosives and petroleum. Members of the force also acted as enumerators at the censuses of population.

Extractions: This biographical sketch is adapted from the LDS Biographical Encyclopedia , compiled and edited by Andrew Jenson, Volume 1, page 238. The article was written by Elder Orson F. Whitney , Apostle of the Lord. Robert Taylor Burton, second counselor to Bishop Edward Hunter from 1875 to 1883, and first counselor to Bishop William B. Preston from 1884 to 1907, was the son of Samuel Burton and Hannah Shipley, and was born Oct. 25, 1821, at Amherstburg, Canada West. He was the tenth in a family of fourteen children, seven of whom were born in England and the rest in America. His parents emigrated to America in 1817, and after residing two or three years in New York State they removed to western Canada. Returning to Canada he was himself converted to the faith which his parents had espoused, and was baptized by Elder Henry Cook, October 23, 1838. In the latter part of that month he left Canada, with his father's family, for Far West, Caldwell county, Missouri, and had gone as far as Walnut Grove, Knox county, Illinois, when he learned of the terrible persecutions of the Saints in the adjoining State. He therefore concluded, with others, to remain at Walnut Grove, where a branch of the Church was organized, and there the Burton family resided for about two years.
