Extractions: Albuquerque, New Mexico Since its opening in 1969, the objective of the National Atomic museum has been to provide a readily accessible repository of educational materials, and information on the Atomic Age. In addition, the museum's goal is to preserve, interpret, and exhibit to the public memorabilia of this Age. In late 1991 the museum was chartered by Congress as the United States' only official Atomic museum. Prominently featured in the museum's high bay is the story of the Manhattan Engineer District, the unprecedented 2.2 billion dollar scientific-engineering project that was centered in New Mexico during World War II. The Manhattan Project as it was more commonly called, developed, built, and tested the world's first Atomic bomb in New Mexico. This display also includes casings similar to the only Atomic bombs ever used in warfare. Dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these two bombs helped bring World War II to an end in mid-August 1945. The story of the Manhattan Project's three secret cities, Hanford, Washington, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is also presented in this area. A portion of the museum, the low bay, is devoted to exhibits on the research, development, and use of various forms of nuclear energy. Historical and other traveling exhibits are also displayed in this area. Also found in the low bay is the museum's store, which is operated by the museum's foundation.

Extractions: Government Libraries and Museums The hundreds of government libraries are valuable sources of information, for their card catalogs of books, reports, bibliographies, and increasingly, for abstracts or even full- text of holdings. DOE libraries form the core of the government's holdings with regard to nuclear weapons collections. DOD maintains more than 900 libraries within different military organizations and at local bases. About two dozen are major academic and technical resources with significant collections (see William M. Arkin, The U.S. Military Online (Brassey's 1997) for a complete listing). DOD libraries with particularly useful online catalogs and/or search engines relevant to nuclear weapons are listed below. The Departments of Defense and Energy also operate dozens of museums. Many have holdings relating to nuclear weapons available online. Additional academic libraries also have valuable sites with photographs and information about aircraft, missiles or other types of weapon systems.

Extractions: Photo: FDR Library Archives When Einstein learned that the Germans might succeed in solving these problems, he wrote to President Franklin Roosevelt with his concerns. Einstein's 1939 letter helped initiate the U.S. effort to build an atomic bomb, but work proceeded slowly at first. Two other findings in 1940 and 1941 demonstrated conclusively that the bomb was feasible and made building the bomb a top priority for the United States : the determination of the "critical mass" of uranium needed and the confirmation that plutonium could undergo fission and be used in a bomb. In December 1941, the government launched the Manhattan Project, the scientific and military undertaking to develop the bomb. A Letter to the President In August 1939, Einstein wrote to U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt to warn him that the Nazis were working on a new and powerful weapon: an atomic bomb. Fellow physicist Leo Szilard urged Einstein to send the letter and helped him draft it.

Dooh! I'll recap in point form. Upon arriving in Santa Fe, in the dark, we promptly got lost in the narrow, winding canyon roads above city centre, eventually having to back down 100 meters of the narrowest, curviest road in our 50' rig. We drew spectators and detractors ("Why don't you get a smaller car?!?!" quipped one particularly witty local) but no help until a very kind couple we flagged down lead us out of the maze. Thank-you, whoever you are. After climbing 2,000 feet out of Santa Fe on a somewhat wider canyon road, we arrived at Hyde State Park and promptly overheated the engine while trying to park the trailer. Tempers had already overheated in the thin air of frustration. While waiting for engine and tempers to cool a t-storm blew in. Gave up on parking the trailer and went restlessly to sleep.

Extractions: Home Issues NAPF Programs Take Action ... Youth Outreach See for Yourself We all know the educational exercise in which a group of people stand in a circle and one person whispers a statement in the ear of one of the individuals next to him or her. The statement makes its way around the circle, but by the time the statement comes back to the source, the message has completely changed. This game illustrates the inaccurate process of relaying information, the tendency to misrepresent and embellish, and the importance of primary sources. This lesson can be applied to situations ranging form personal one-on-one interactions to international media corporations. Ultimately, the lesson emphasizes the importance of critical thinking. The Nuclear Age Peace Foundation believes that field trips, when combined with books, videos, lectures, and web sites, enhance young people's ability to think critically and develop as leaders. Similarly, the capacity to understand and articulate the connections between various social justice issues is a valuable asset. As such, the Foundation is organizing field trips in southern California this year so as to encourage our youth to explore their surrounding communities for themselves. Similarly, we have provided separate lists of international and adventurous destinations for individuals interested in organizing their own trips.
