The United States initiated its own program under the Army Corps of Engineers in June 1942. America needed to build an atomic weapon before Germany or Japan did. General Leslie R. Groves, Deputy Chief of Construction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, was appointed to direct this top-secret project. University of Chicago Meanwhile, experiments in a small laboratory beneath the University of Chicago's abandoned Stagg Field were expanding understanding of atomic theory. The first controlled nuclear reaction occurred under Stagg Field. More Oak Ridge, Tennessee Scientists now had to create the fuel for an atomic bomb. The Oak Ridge facility separated the nuclear fuel U-235 from U-238, natural uranium.

Ths museum was inspired and modelled on the U.S. National Atomic Museum. In the picture below, the weaponized version of the 20 Kt Joe-1 (the first Soviet atojmic weapon) can be seen at right and the weaponized version of the 400 Kt Joe-4 (the thermonuclear "Sloika" device) on left. In the middle is the 40 Kt improved implosion bomb Joe-2, tested 24 September 1951 at 38 Kt. Extractions: An American museum has stopped selling earrings in the shape of the nuclear bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The director of the National Atomic Museum in New Mexico said the decision had been made because of sensitivity around the current anniversaries of the attacks. Anti-nuclear activists in Japan were outraged when they saw the miniature replicas advertised on the museum's Internet site. The museum said the earrings sold out on Friday and it had no plans to restock them. Ceremonies were held in Hiroshima on Friday to mark the 54th anniversary of the attack, which killed some 140,000 people out of an estimated population of 350,000. A larger bomb dropped on Nagasaki three days later effectively sealed Japanese surrender and ended World War II. Internet sales The US National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque had sold the "Little Boy" and "Fat Man" earrings, named after the bombs dropped on the two cities, at $20 for a pair of one of each.
Fort Benning MWR Web Site Serving America S Army The National Infantry MUSeum, established at the Home of the US Infantry in Gulf, from the French Charleville flintlock mUSket to the Atomic Davy Crockett http://www.benningmwr.com/museum.cfm
Extractions: The National Infantry Museum, established at the Home of the U.S. Infantry in 1959, has just one mission: to honor the infantryman and his more than two centuries of proud service to the nation. The museum offers visitors 30,000 square feet of exhibit space within an impressive historic masonry building that features large, well-lighted, carpeted galleries. The building, which is climate controlled, is accessible to those using wheelchairs. An elevator serves all four floors of the museum. Over 100,000 visitors each year trace with pride the footsteps of infantrymen from the 1607 wilderness of Virginia to the 1991 sands of the Persian Gulf, from the French Charleville flintlock musket to the atomic Davy Crockett, from victory at Yorktown to events in Vietnam. Visitors are exposed to an ever-changing kaleidoscope of edged weapons, uniforms, footwear, mess equipment, fine oil paintings, firearms, bronzes, helmets, and vehicles from a 1902 Studebaker Utility Wagon to the legendary Jeep. Family members with different tastes will soon discover that the museum is much more than a collection of things painted Army green. Around the next corner you may see a petrified tree, an 1825 coverlet, a bronze by Davidson or Fraser, a document signed by John Hancock, George Washington, or Franklin D. Roosevelt, a bust of Adolph Hitler, a gas mask for a horse, a Medal of Honor, a French tapestry, an M-1 Garand, Springfield musket, or M-16 rifle. You might see an 1840 Chickering piano, a prisoner of war uniform, a set of Civil War dominos, playing cards, a painted eagle drum, or a bugle. The museum shows not only the weapons, uniforms, and personal equipment of U.S. infantrymen, but also that of the enemies who chose to test our resolve.

Extractions: ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. U.S. military radio transmissions intercepted by Japanese intelligence during World War II were spoken in such an unusual lexicon that Japan regarded the Americans' "secret code" unbreakable. The code, based on the Navajo language, was used by a select group of Navajos from New Mexico and Arizona who served as signalmen with Marine combat units from May 1942 until the war's end. A new photography exhibit at the National Atomic Museum in Albuquerque (Wyoming Blvd. on Kirtland Air Force Base), titled "Warriors: Navajo Code Talkers," provides a glimpse into the contemporary lives of the 150-200 surviving code talkers. During World War II, the code talkers developed and used a system of fewer than 500 Navajo "code words" representing common military terms. The linguistic complexity of their language frustrated Japanese intelligence efforts, and many believe it played a significant role in the American offensive at Iwo Jima. The code was never broken. The exhibit, which runs Nov. 1-Dec. 31, includes forty 16x20-inch black-and-white photographs taken by Japanese-American photographer Kenji Kawano from 1982-1988. Kawano began photographing Navajos in 1974 and later served as the tribe's official photographer and as a staff photographer for the daily
Extractions: NATIONAL ATOMIC MUSEUM Operated by the Department of Energy (DOE), the National Atomic Museum contains a large collection of declassified nuclear technology. Since its opening in 1969, the objective of the National Atomic museum has been to provide a readily accessible repository of educational materials, and information on the Atomic Age. In addition, the museum's goal is to preserve, interpret, and exhibit to the public memorabilia of this Age. In late 1991 the museum was chartered by Congress as the United States' only official Atomic museum. Prominently featured in the museum's high bay is the story of the Manhattan Engineer District, the unprecedented 2.2 billion dollar scientific-engineering project that was centered in New Mexico during World War II. The Manhattan Project as it was more commonly called, developed, built, and tested the world's first Atomic bomb in New Mexico. This display also includes casings similar to the only Atomic bombs ever used in warfare. Dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these two bombs helped bring World War II to an end in mid-August 1945. The story of the Manhattan Project's three secret cities , Hanford, Washington, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is also presented in this area.

MEETING LOCATION New "Taking Flight" Exhibit By Mike Blohm, ASM Contest Director ASM M-15, IPMS 10602 Two models built or modified by ASM are part of the National Atomic Museums new "Taking Flight" display that opened on April 12, 2003. The Museum is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers first flight (December 17, 1903) by putting on an exhibition of the "past, present and future of flight" including both aviation and space exploration. The display includes artwork, artifacts and activities and will run through Spring 2004. The two 1/72 scale models include a B-36 "Peacemaker" and a B-52 "Stratofortress." Frank Randall built the B-36 for the Cavalcade of Nuclear Bombers display constructed by ASM in the late 1990s. The B-52 was part of the museums own model collection, but needed some massive repair and repainting by Mike Blohm prior to being put on display. The two models are displayed in two separate cases in the center of the display (see pictures). Each model is mounted on a rod in the center of the case, and is surrounded by period artifacts such as checklists. A two-sided plaque between the cases tells the story of the B-36 and B-52. ASM is given credit as the builders of the models in a placard at the bottom of the B-36 case.

I spent two weeks with teachers from across the country learning about energy. The teachers took a number of field trips, so I got to see so much (from an "ant's-eye view," of course). Here are some of the trip highlights: The National Atomic Museum has great resources and exhibits about the United States' use of nuclear energy for all kinds of things. It is no surprise that the National Atomic Museum is in New Mexico, because this state is also the home of Los Alamos National Laboratory, where the U.S. developed the first nuclear weapon. This museum takes you on a tour through the development of nuclear weapons to today's use of nuclear power - power released from the nucleus of an atom - to generate electricity to heat and cool our homes, make our lamps and home computers work and more. Nuclear power provides many things to the United States and other countries around the world - from nuclear medicine to devices to test bridges for structural integrity - harnessing the power of the atom was one of the biggest discoveries of the last 100 years.
