Extractions: Office of Biological and Environmental Research All DOE employees, contractors, and grantees must be mindful of the importance of protecting the rights and welfare of human subject research volunteers. In a world of rapidly advancing medical technology, revolutionary genetics research, and ever-increasing threats to personal privacy, the protection of human subjects in research is paramount. All research conducted at DOE, supported with DOE funds, or performed by DOE employees, including classified and proprietary, must comply with Federal regulations and DOE Orders to protect human subjects.
DOE - Fossil Energy - Carbon Sequestration Research Program U.S. Department of Energy program of research and other efforts to develop mid to long-term solutions for reducing carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere, including sequestration in oceans, geologic formations, and terrestrial ecosystems. http://www.fe.doe.gov/programs/sequestration/
Extractions: Natural Gas Regulation ... Go to DOE Home Page "Carbon sequestration" is a family of methods for capturing and permanently isolating gases that otherwise could contribute to global climate change. Affordable and environmentally safe sequestration approaches could offer a way to stabilize atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide without requiring the United States and other countries to make large-scale and potentially costly changes to their energy infrastructures. "We all believe technology offers great promise to significantly reduce [greenhouse gas] emissions especially carbon capture, storage and sequestration technologies." President George W. Bush

Extractions: Human Radiation Experiments The Office of Human Radiation Experiments, established in March 1994, leads the Department of Energy's efforts to tell the agency's Cold War story of radiation research using human subjects. We have undertaken an intensive effort to identify and catalog relevant historical documents from DOE's 3.2 million cubic feet of records scattered across the country. Internet access to these resources is a key part of making DOE more open and responsive to the American public.

Office Of Worker And Community Tries to minimize the social and economic impacts of changes in DOE activities and to encourage disposition of the Department of Energy's unneeded assets. http://www.wct.doe.gov/
Extractions: The Office of Legacy Management (LM) has been established and is officially up and running as of December 15, 2003. Secretary Abraham has appointed Michael W. Owen, most recently Director of the Office of Worker and Community Transition, to head up this new Office. The Office of Legacy Management is responsible for the long-term care of legacy liabilities of former nuclear weapons production sites following completion of the environmental management cleanup effort. In order to consolidate programs of a similar nature, the Office of Worker and Community Transition and portions of the Office of Environmental Management have been incorporated into LM. To ensure continuity of expertise, LM personnel is composed of staff formerly of the Office of Worker and Community Transition; personnel from the Environmental Managements Office of Long-Term Stewardship; around 16 Grand Junction Office personnel in Grand Junction Colorado; and Environmental Management-funded personnel located at the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Morgantown, West Virginia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. We will continue to update this web site to reflect LM activities.

TOMPAINE.COM NEWS BULLETIN WEDNESDAY January 12, 2000. Secretary Bill Richardson announced today that that he is "blocking the release" of the radioactive nickel the Department of Energy had slated to be cleaned and sold on the open market. The DOE is considering alternative uses which would prevent the nickel, which is from a decommissioned nuclear weapons plant, from being integrated into consumer products. Richardson also announced that the DOE would stop the open sale of other metals from its facilities that, like nickel, are contaminated throughout their mass, which may prevent complete decontamination. A spokesperson pointed out that the secretary, who was not at the Department in 1997 when the plan was put into action, wants to make sure the American people are comfortable with the project. "Secretary Richardson felt that the public should be given the opportunity to weigh in," the spokesperson said. "He'd like the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop national standards, and then he'd like to re-visit the issue once those standards are in place." Winonnah Hauter of Public Citizen comments that DOE's announcement does not impact the more than 100,000 tons of surface contaminated metal that it plans to clean and sell from Oak Ridge, nor the 2 million tons of such metal that could be recycled in the future.
