   Extractions: AMAZON PRODUCTS Geneva (nicknamed Gene) Stratton was born on a farm in Indiana. Her favorite spot as an adult, however, was the Limberlost Swamp in Wabash County, Indiana. In fact, she often trekked into the Limberlost with camera, notepad, and glass plates. She photographed the birds and wildlife and then developed the photos herself, sometimes tinting them with watercolors. As a married woman, Gene Porter lived with her husband and daughter Jeanette in the Limberlost Cabin situated just at the edge of the swamp. Gene created a Limberlost character named Freckles – an orphaned boy who has only one hand. As the plot unfolds, the reader learns that Freckles feels he is “absolutely nothing” and that this is all he is ever destined to be. A kind owner of a lumber camp and the Swamp Angel prove otherwise. The book Freckles was so popular that Ms. Porter decided to follow it with another Limberlost tale. The next book was entitled A Girl of the Limberlost and told the story of Elnora Comstock who collected butterflies from the depth of the swamp. Elnora’s father had died in the swamp, and for this, Elnora’s mother carried an unyielding hatred for the Limberlost. Ironically, it was the Limberlost that gave Elnora comfort and solace. This was by far Gene Stratton-Porter’s most famous work. When the real Limberlost Swamp was drained for cropland, Ms. Porter lost her laboratory and her inspiration. However, the State of Indiana declared the area a Historic Site. Today, the lands have been restored to marshlands. Travelers may take swamp tours, see the bird sanctuary, and tour the Porter cabin.

Her father, who descended from British ancestors, was a licensed Methodist minister and prosperous farmer. He loved books and read aloud his childred and to visitors about great historical characters. Mary Stratton was of Dutch extraction and knew how to distill perfume from flowers. "God fashioned her heart to be gracious," said Mark Stratton once, "he body to be the mother of children, and as her especial gift of Grace, he put Flower Magic into her fingers."

Mark Stratton Geneva Grace, later known as Gene, came as a surprise to her parents, Mark and Mary Stratton. On August 17, 1863, in the small town of Lagro, located in Wabash County Mary Stratton Gene Age 10 In 1875, the family moved from the dearly loved farm to Largo to stay with one of their daughters. Four months later, Mary died. After her death, the Stratton family moved often, living at the homes of Gene's siblings. When Gene was twenty, she met her future husband. Charles Porter was a successful druggist and self-made businessman in Geneva , Indiana. He first saw Gene when they both attended a Chautauqua at Island Park Assembly, which was a religious revival, located on Sylvan Lake. It is the former home of naturalist Gene Stratton-Porter, one of Indiana's most widely read authors and one of the world's first and best nature photographers. I n her lifetime (1863-1924) Porter authored novels, nature works, poetry and essays, as well as numerous magazine articles. With an estimated following of 50 million readers, her works have been translated into several foreign languages. Eight of her novels have been produced in motion pictures. The vast, undeveloped forests and swamp lands of Limberlost North, as well as Porter's formal gardens, provided a rich source of material for her nature studies, writings and photography. The two-story cabin, designed by Mrs. Porter, has an exterior of Wisconsin cedar logs. Paneling throughout the first floor is of local wild cherry. There are three extraordinary fireplaces on the first floor: one of polished English brick, one of stone and Indian artifacts and one of puddin' stone. Many of Porter's furnishings and personal memorabilia, including Mrs. Porter's personal Library, are preserved at the home.
