When she was a mere child of four years, Mrs. Beecher died, yet she never ceased to influence the lives of her children. Mrs. Stowe writes : "Although my mother's bodily presence disappeared from our circle, I think that her memory and example had more influence in moulding her family than the living presence of many mothers." After her death, Mrs. Stowe was placed under the care of her grandmother at Guilford, Connecticut Here she listened, with untiring interest, to the ballads of Sir Walter Scott and the poems of Robert Burns The "Arabian Nights," also, was to her a dream of delightan enchanted palace, through which her imagination ran wild. After her father's second marriage, her education was continued at the Litchfield academy under the charge of Sarah Pierce and John Brace. Houghton in 1852, was noted for the quality of its distinguished American Literature series. This presentation of Stowe's works, issued posthumously, includes an inserted page signed by the author on January 4, 1896 with the printed inscription, "The author's autograph, written especially for this edition just a few months before her death." V olumes one and two of this collection include a Biographical Sketch of Stowe, Uncle Tom's Cabin , and Key-, and an essay "The Story of Uncle Tom's Cabin," by Charles Dudley Warner. A prominent essayist, Warner was a Stowe family friend best known for his collaboration with Mark Twain on The Gilded Age. He published his famous essay on the work's history simultaneously in The Atlantic Monthly , a journal to which Stowe had contributed frequently.

Born in Litchfield, Connecticut, Stowe was the daughter of the liberal clergyman Lyman Beecher. Her husband, the Reverend Calvin Ellis Stowe, was also an ardent opponent of slavery. Her first book, The Mayflower, or Sketches of Scenes and Characters Among the Descendants of the Pilgrims, appeared in 1843. While living in Brunswick, Maine, Stowe wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin. It was serialized in an abolitionist paper, the National Era, and issued as a book in 1852. As a serial, the story attracted no unusual notice. The success of the book, however, was unprecedented; 500,000 copies were sold in the United States alone within five years, and it was translated into more than 20 foreign languages. It did much to crystallize militant antislavery sentiment in the North, and therefore was an important factor in precipitating the American Civil War (1861-1865). Uncle Tom's Cabin, like most of Stowe's novels, is rambling in structure, but rich in pathos and dramatic incident. It is one of the best examples of the so-called sentimental fiction that enjoyed popularity in the United States during the 1800s. Sentimental writers focused on domestic scenes, and their work evoked strong emotions. Like Stowe, many of these authors were social reformists, but they were criticized for creating overly idealized characters.
