Extractions: Cal Stewart, aka Uncle Josh Weathersby CAL STEWART (1856-1919) is famous for comic monologues in which he spoke as Uncle Josh Weathersby, a resident of Pumpkin Center (Punkin Center), an imaginary New England village. His droll humor has been compared to that of Mark Twain and Will Rogers. His performances are characterized as "Yankee dialect stories," "laughing stories," "Yankee talk," and "rural comedy." His early life was spent working on trains and in circuses, medicine shows and vaudeville. He began recording in about 1897. Uncle Josh's most distinctive mannerism is a laugh given after he speaks a few lines. Nearly all Stewart's recordings feature Uncle Josh.
