Extractions: James Stephens A funny, albeit fairly conventional, writer who was oddly selected by Joyce to complete Finnegans Wake if he should die before finishing it. Stephens is best remembered today for his fantasy The Crock of Gold A critical biography Here is one of his best stories, originally intended to be the first chapter of an autobiography. A Rhinoceros, Some Ladies and A Horse By James Stephens One day, in my first job, a lady fell in love with me. It was quite unreasonable, of course, for I wasn't wonderful: I was small and thin, and I weighed much the same as a largish duck-egg. I didn't fall in love with her, or anything like that. I got under the table, and stayed there until she had to go wherever she had to go to. At that time there was nothing on God's earth that I could do, except run. I had no brains, and I had no memory. When I was told to do anything I got into such an enthusiasm about it that I couldn't remember anything else about it. I just ran as hard as I could, and then I ran back, proud and panting. And when they asked me for the whatever-it-was that I had run for, I started, right on the instant, and ran some more. The place I was working at was, amongst other things, a theatrical agency. I used to be sitting in a corner of the office floor, waiting to be told to run somewhere and hack. A lady would come ina music-hall lady that isand, in about five minutes, howls of joy would start coming from the inner office. Then, peacefully enough, the lady and my two bosses would come out, and the lady always said, 'Splits! I can do splits like no one.' And one of my bosses would say, 'I'm keeping your splits in mind.' And the other would add, gallantly'No one who ever saw your splits could ever forget 'em.'

The Irish Language Among its bestknown exponents, apart from Yeats, were James Stephens (1882-1950),George Russell (1867-1935) and George Moore (1852-1933). http://www.irelandhouse-korea.com/litera_txt.html
Extractions: The two official languages are Irish, which is the national language, and English. Irish is a Celtic language, closely related to Scottish Gaelic, Welsh and Breton. It was the language of the vast majority of the population until the early 19th century but so rapid was the shift to English that by 1891 over 85% spoke English only. Following on a national cultural revival and the establishment of an independent Irish State in the early 20th century, and because of the subsequent promotion of Irish, the situation has improved in recent decades. The latest figures available show that 32.5% of adults claim to have a knowledge of the language. Irish is the principal language in areas known as the Gaeltacht, situated mainly along the western seaboard. A State authority, Udaras na Gaeltachta, promotes industrial development in these Irish-speaking areas. A State agency, Bord na Gaeilge (the Irish Language Board), promotes the use of Irish throughout the country. Irish is a core subject in primary and secondary level schools. In recent years a growing number of schools offer tuition exclusively through the medium of the Irish language. These schools are called Gaelscoil (or all-Irish schools). A national radio service (Radio na Gaeltachta) and national television service (Teilifis na Gaeilge) provide programming in Irish. Written literature in Old Irish dates from the 6th century AD. Heroic sagas depict the deeds of the mythic warriors CuChulainn and Fionn;lyrical and conventional poetry from that time also survives. The early Modern period (1250-1650) produced bardic verse and prose but the literary language was then displaced by the vernacular form which gave rise to an extensive popular poetic literature.
Extractions: The collection consists of correspondence to and from Lovat Fraser and Grace Crawford Lovat Fraser, with letters to and from other family members, friends and business colleagues. Fraser's juvenile correspondence to and from his parents and his brother, Alan (approx. 200 pieces, c.1899-1907), contains many early sketches and gives a vivid picture of his life in boarding school. His mature correspondence with family members (approx. 250 letters), include his descriptive and often poignant letters home from the Front. Many of these are illustrated as well. Letters to Fraser and/or Crawford, including letters to Crawford after Fraser's death, include correspondence from members of the English literary, music and theatrical community of the first half of the twentieth century. Some of the correspondents are:

Extractions: English 683 The Irish Short Story cmay@csulb.edu The most common assumption about Irish fiction is that the Irish are particularly gifted as short-story writers. However, because of Ireland's historically marginal status in relation to England and because of the short story's historically marginal status as a genre, many of the authors covered in this course are, with the exception of James Joyce, neglected in the English curriculum in America, in spite of the fact that many Irish stories are centrally important to the development of Irish fiction in particular and the modern short story in general.
