He was the son of a lawyer and was educated at a strict Jesuit school. He left home as soon as possible and joined the army of Napolean Bonaparte. After leaving the military in 1802, he lived a bohemian lifestyle in Paris. Stendhal began his writing career in Italy with L'Histoire de la peinture en Italie and Rome, Naples, et Florence en 1817 . He was exiled from Italy four years later after being convicted of aiding the rebel cause for independence. He returned to Paris where he wrote one of his most popular works, De l'amour . This thesis explored the nature of love. It was based, at least in part, on his own relationships with women. In 1830, he worked for the French consulate while writing

Il est le fils de Chérubin Beyle, avocat au parlement et de Henriette Gagnon. Il n'aura aucune affinité avec son père " un homme extrêmement peu aimable, réfléchissant toujours à des acquisitions ou des ventes de domaine ". Henri Beyle prendra en littérature le nom de Stendhal. Sa mère meurt alors qu'il n'a que sept ans. Il en sera inconsolable et reportera son affection sur son grand-père maternel, le docteur Henri Gagnon. Henri Beyle a pour précepteur l'abbé Raillane, et souffrira de sa tyrannie : " Je haïssais, l'abbé, je haïssais mon père, source des pouvoirs de l'abbé, je haïssais encore plus la religion au nom de laquelle, ils me tyrannisaient ". ( La vie de Henry Brulard , publiée à titre posthume en 1890) Il est élève à l'Ecole Centrale de Grenoble. Il y restera jusqu'en 1799. Il se distingue en mathématiques. En octobre, il part à Paris pour passer le concours de l'Ecole Polytechnique. Il renonce à se présenter. Il sera très déçu par la capitale et tombera malade. Il va habiter chez ses cousins, les Daru. Son cousin Pierre Daru, l'emploie comme fonctionnaire au Ministère de la Guerre.

Né à Grenoble, il eut une jeunesse malheureuse, marquée par sa révolte contre son père et contre l'abbé Raillane, son précepteur et évoquée dans son roman autobiographique Vie de Henry Brulard (posth., 1890). Après avoir effectué ses humanités à Grenoble, il se rendit à Paris (1799) pour y suivre des études de mathématiques. Renonçant au concours de l'École polytechnique, il s'engagea dans l'armée de Bonaparte (1800) et devint sous-lieutenant de dragons. Au cours de ses diverses affectations, il découvrit l'Italie avec enthousiasme et commença, dès 1801, à reporter ses impressions de voyage dans son Journal (posth., 1888-1935). Passionné par la littérature après l'avoir été par le dessin et les mathématiques, il se livra à la lecture des romanciers et des philosophes du XVIIIe siècle, puis, désireux d'écrire « des comédies comme Molière », entreprit la rédaction de deux pièces de théâtre ( les Deux Hommes et Letellier Vies de Haydn, de Mozart et de Métastase
