    Extractions: En 1800, son cousin Pierre Daru l'aide à faire une carrière militaire, mais rapidement l'armée l'ennuie et en 1801, il remonte à Paris. Il commence alors à fréquenter les salons parisiens et tombe amoureux de Mélanie Guilbert, une jeune actrice. Après leur rupture, en 1806, il reprend du service dans l'armée et est envoyé en Allemagne, dans la ville de Stendal, d'où il trouvera son pseudonyme.

Supposedly chosen because it is an anagram of "Shetland", although this may have been Georges Perec's inventions. References to Le Rouge et le Noir feature heavily in Perec's unfinished last novel 53 jours . Stendhal's somewhat realistic style was unwelcome during the Romantic period in which he lived; he was not fully appreciated until the dawn of the 20th century. He dedicated his writing to "the Happy Few", referring to those who would one day recognize his own genius. Today, his works are noted for their irony and psychological and historical aspects. Stendhal was born in Grenoble, France. He died in Paris. Novels include: Armance Le Rouge et le Noir (1830) (variously translated as Scarlet and Black, Red and Black, The Red and the Black La Chartreuse de Parme (1839). His other work is L'amour , a singular treatise in which the author gives his views on love and records one of his own failed relationships. Better known by his nom de plume of STENDHAL, French author, was born at Grenoble on. the 23rd of January 1783. With his father, who was an avocat in the parlement of Grenoble, he was never on good terms, but his intractable disposition sufficiently explains his unhappy childhood and youth. Until he was twelve years old he was educated by a priest, who succeeded in inspiring him with a lasting hatred of clericalism. He was then sent to the newly established École Centrale at Grenoble, and in 1799 to Paris with a letter of introduction to the Daru family, with which the Beyles were connected. Pierre Daru offered him a place in the ministry for war, and with the brothers Daru he followed
