Extractions: Click to enlarge Order now Three Bulgarian Dances feature the asymmetrical rhythmic patterns of Bulgarian folk music, often notated in meters based on prime numbers such as 5, 7, or 11. "Bulgarian Rhythm" was first widely used in classical music in the 1920's by the second generation of professional Bulgarian composers, and in the 1930's by the Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. Haidushko Horo (Haiduk Dance) is an instrumental version of "Bre, Stoyane," a song by Parashkev Hadzhiev (1912-1992) with words by Pencho Slaveykov (1825-1895). Set in a meter of 5, the lively outer sections depict the carefree Stoyan as he transports hay in a horsedrawn cart, while in the minor-key middle section he pauses as he weighs options in courting a maiden: shall he break her pitcher, give her a flower, or go ahead and kiss her? The words at measures 95-97 suggest that he adopts an attitude of forebearance: "After all, kissing's forever." An esteemed professor of harmony and composition at the State Music Academy in Sofia, Hadzhiev wrote more than a hundred stage works and was also prolific in courtship, holding the Bulgarian record for number of marriages (7) and divorces (6). Selski Tants (Village Dance) is taken from the Shumen Miniatures, a set of six piano pieces by Pancho Vladigerov (1899-1978). In this piece two measures in a meter of 5 alternate with a measure in unevenly divided 9, and the more chromatic harmonies and ever-changing drone notes give this dance a more modern, yet still clearly folk-influenced, sound. The leading representative of Bulgaria's second-generation composers, Vladigerov was a prodigious pianist/composer who was taken to Berlin at an early age to develop his talent. He worked for Max Reinhard at the Deutsches Theater from 1920-32 before returning to Bulgaria as a professor at the State Music Academy in Sofia, an institution that now bears his name.

Extractions: Step lively mateys, there be pirates afoot! If you ever wondered where most of our ideas about pirates originated, now you know... or you will after you've read this marvelous collection of stories. It includes historical information that probably inspired every pirate tale that would come after it from parrots and marooning to treasure, swords and keelhauling. Included are accounts of Blackbeard, Captain Kidd, Captain Morgan, and many, many more. Rarely have the exploits of the marauding buccaneers and privateers of the Spanish Main been put so well to quill and parchment. Jim Hawkins, narrator of Stevenson's classic tale, is rewarded for giving aid to an old pirate, Billy Bones, with a map showing the way to a buried treasure. He and his comrades set sail for the island on a ship manned by a band of pirates a fact they discover during the voyage. The pirate king is the notorious peg-legged cook Long John Silver, one of Stevenson's most favorably received villains. The pirates are vanquished, the treasure is retrieved, and Stevenson's novel is widely admired as one of the greatest adventure novels of all time. The young physician Peter Blood, unjustly convicted of treason during the reign of King James II, is exiled from England and sold into slavery in Jamaica. He escapes and becomes a pirate. Later he returns to England, and joins the Royal Navy in its efforts against France. Does this title sound familiar? Captain Blood, filmed in 1935, was Errol Flynn's first swashbuckler and catapulted him to worldwide stardom.

Extractions: Although Tryavna is an old crafts' centre with no less than 140 listed buildings, it is not however a typical museum town, since its position on the mountain slopes has ensured its unspoiled beauty. The whole town exudes an air of the National Revival period. Wandering through the narrow streets one cannot help but notice the richly designed woodcarvings, which abound both inside and outside the houses. Besides the interesting exhibitions to be seen in the homes of National Revival figures such as Angel Kanchev, Petko and Pencho Slaveykov, is the Daskalov's House built in 1804, which has been turned into an ethnographic museum. The distinctive style of the 19th century Tryavna school can be viewed in the Museum of Icon Painting and Woodcarving, the architectural and historical ensembles The Old Square, P. R. Slaveikov street, Kachaunska neighbourhood and the place Tepavitsite, Skortsite village, the temples St. Archangel Michael and St. George. The Embassy Of The Republic Of Bulgaria In New Delhi That was the period marked by the works of the Bulgarian poets and writers IvanVazov, Aleko Konstantinov, Dimcho Debelyanov, Pencho Slaveykov the first http://www.bulgariaembindia.com/history.htm
Extractions: The territory of Bulgaria has been inhabited since the earliest historical times: the Stone Age and the Chalcolithic Age. The Bulgarian land reveals signs of human presence as far back as the end of the early Pal eolith (700 000 to 100 000 B.C.). Archaeological excavations have extracted from the entrails of Bulgarian land indisputable proofs of human life continuity - flint kernel items, blades, points and scrapers, fire and hunting traces have been discovered in many Bulgarian caves. Rich soil and favourable climatic conditions led to the emergence of arable farming and stock-breeding. This had marked future radical turn of the development of the human society. An early processing and use of the metals - copper, bronze alloys and gold has been proved by the discoveries in the north-eastern part of the country. The world oldest processed gold, dug out from Varna necropolis is just one of them.
