Harris, 1926- , author of Dallas, Texas, engendered in the writing of his book, Upton Sinclair, American Rebel , published by Crowell in 1975 (Lilly PS3537 .I85 Z689), and drafts of the book. The letters from 1931-1964 are those to and from Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, author and social reformer, which Harris acquired during his research. In full: " I have just read, in your Nov.22 issue, MacKinlay Kantor's extraordinary article, 'If the South Had Won the Civil War.' Permit me to diasgree, and to explain that I know the subject, for before Mr. Kantor was born I studied the the (sic) Civil War collection at Princeton University Library, for my novel, 'Manassas,' published in 1903, and recently reissued under the title, 'Theirs Be the Guilt.' I read the original sources, the men who would have ruled if the South had won: Davis, Stephens, Toombs, Yancev, a dozen others I could name. I know their minds, and Mr. Kantor couldn't have been more wrong. They would have hung Abe Lincoln-'the slavehound of Illinois,' they called him. They would have made Maryland and Kentucky into slave states, and they would have done the same for everything west of Illinois to the Pacific. In five years they would have taken Mexico and Central America, and in another five they would have gone as far South as Brazil. To cultivate that vast region they would have restored the African slave trade, wholesale. They would have policed the North, and compelled the repeal of the Fugitive Slave Act, and made the hiding of a fugitive slave a hanging act.

    Extractions: Library Upton Sinclair Dictionary Upton Beall Sinclair, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland on September 20th, 1878 to a poor family. His father sold liquor and was an alcoholic. The family moved to New York in 1888. In order to pay for his studies at New York City College, in 1893, he began writing, mostly for magazines. In 1897 he began Columbia University. Sinclair married for the first time in 1900. Using the unhappiness of his marriage as his muse, he wrote Springtime and Harvest in 1901. He joined the Socialist Party in 1902. In 1906, an assignment from a Socialist magazine led Sinclair to write what is, perhaps, his most popular and well-known novel, The Jungle . The book reported on the appalling conditions of the Chicago meatpacking industry and eventually led to the Pure Food and Drug Act ("For preventing the manufacture, sale, or transportation of adulterated or misbranded or poisonous or deleterious foods, drugs, medicines, and liquors, and for regulating traffic therein, and for other purposes.") Sinclair settled in Pasadena, California in 1915. His other works include

He was one of the muckrakers , and an interest in social and industrial reform underlies most of his writing. The Jungle (1906), a brutally graphic novel of the Chicago stockyards, aroused great public indignation and led to reform of federal food inspection laws. With the money from that novel, Sinclair established in 1906 his short-lived socialist community, Helicon Home Colony, at Englewood, N.J. Among Sinclair's other novels exposing social evils are King Coal Oil! Boston (on the Sacco-Vanzetti Case, 1928), and Little Steel (1938). In his social studies, such as The Brass Check (1919), on journalism, and The Goose-Step (1923), on education, he tried to uncover the harmful effects of capitalist economic pressure on institutions of learning and culture. An ardent socialist, Sinclair was in and out of the American Socialist party. In 1934 he was defeated as the Democratic candidate for governor of California.
