Father to all "Gentlymen," this child's example condemns others to hollow rhetoric; as Henry concludes: "Ons agayn I say Imytate hym." It is not only Henry Sidney whom Philip silences. Very little has been written about Robert (1563-1626), husband, father, soldier, patron, and little-known Renaissance poet.(9) If much more information has been assembled about Robert's sister Mary, the Countess of Pembroke (1561-1621), a greater part of what we know about the English Renaissance reveals something about their brother Philip (1554-1586). But I want to demonstrate in the first part of this essay that the fortunes and dimensions of the Sidney family can also tell us something about the Renaissance in England. In the second part, I turn to the fortunes and dimensions of Philip Sidney's shadowy image, so useful because it was so unwieldy.

De kjente skjønnlitterære produktene av dette korte dikterlivet er samlingen Astrophel and Stella, og romanen Arcadia. Astrophel and Stella består av sonetter og sanger stilet til hans ungdoms forlovede Penelope Devereux. De ble utgitt etter hans død i 1591. Romanen Arcadia er inspirert av den sengreske romanen og hyrderomanene til Sannazaro og Montemayor. Den skildrer en forholdsvis lett kjærlighetshistorie og er preget både av platonske og kristen-idealistiske strømninger. Romanen ble aldri ferdig, men deler av den ble publisert første gang i 1590, også dette etter opphavsmannens død.
