Extractions: Major General William T. Sherman Federal Army William Tecumseh Sherman was born on May 8, 1820, in Lancaster, Ohio, and educated at the U.S. Military Academy. He was a renowned Union general during the U.S. Civil War and was among the first military leaders to recognize and put into practice the methods that became the tenets of modern warfare. At the start of the Civil War the fiery-tempered Sherman was a colonel and commanded a brigade at the First Battle of Bull Run in July 1861. When Grant became general in chief, Sherman commanded the large Union army of approximately 100,000 men that moved southeast from Dalton, Ga. Although roundly defeated in rash attacks at Kenesaw Mountain, he captured Atlanta in September 1864 after a long series of cat-and-mouse contests with Joseph E. Johnston. An aggressive leader, Sherman was expert in planning and executing long marches and in mastering difficult logistical problems. Spreading out his army about 50 miles wide, he conducted a scorched-earth campaign against the Confederacy ravaging the unprotected Georgia countryside in the famous March to the Sea (Nov. 16-Dec. 22,1864) that resulted in the capture of Savannah. He began his Civil War career as a colonel and, under the command of Ulysses S. Grant, became a major general after the Battle of Shiloh. Their success in the Vicksburg and Chattanooga campaigns made them rising stars in the North. Sherman's capture of Atlanta in September 1864 was a major blow to the Confederacy and a significant factor in Lincoln's reelection in November. Sherman then implemented his philosophy of psychological warfare and property destruction by having his army march through Georgia to Savannah. The Gallery's portrait, one of three that are virtually identical, was painted after the war, and belonged to Sherman, who commissioned a pendant portrait of his wife from Healy in 1868. Extractions: Archives classmate, General Joseph E. Johnston, to make overtures for surrender. The liberal terms which Sherman proposed were accepted by Johnston but rejected in a Washington embittered by the recent assassination of Lincoln and they earned for Sherman the hostile criticism of Secretary of War Stanton and radical Northern newspapers. Nevertheless, he emerged from the War, along with Ulysses S. Grant and the Philip H. Sheridan, as one of the North's three most famous heroes. After the termination of hostilities, Sherman remained in the army and proceeded to St. Louis where he took over command of the Division of the Mississippi. Offered a cabinet post as Secretary of War by President Johnson in January, 1868, he declined despite his sympathy for Johnson in the latter's difficulties. Upon Grant's inauguration as President, Sherman, on Mar. 4, 1869, assumed command of the army, a post he retained until his retirement from active service. As commanding general, in addition to the normal duties of the office, he was forced continually to do battle with politicians eager to reduce the peacetime army to a strength which he considered incompatible with national security.

Extractions: The Soldiers and Sailors Historical Society of Rhode Island was founded circa 1875. Its mission was to preserve and disseminate the history of the Civil War. While the Rhode Island Historical Society had already been active for over fifty years, it had a more antiquarian focus at the time, and a separate society for the Civil War was deemed necessary. Full members were required to be Civil War veterans. At the monthly meetings of the Society, papers were read by members, describing battles and campaigns. The Society also developed a small library for use of its members. In 1878, it began publishing the papers read at its meetings, under the title Personal Narratives of the Battles of the Rebellion . These were published in seven series of about 12 small pamphlets each, and continued through 1915. These publications now constitute a major resource for those interested in the role Rhode Island played in the Civil War.

Extractions: General Grant as Sherman If the question was asked, "Who was and still is the most hated and despised man in the history of Georgia" the response would be William Tecumseh Sherman. From the onset of hostilities in the Atlanta Campaign on May 6, 1864 and the March to the Sea ending two days before Christmas 1864 with him capturing Savannah, no one created more destruction. As a result of his successful campaign in Georgia, the Confederacy was split in two and deprived of much needed supplies, ending the war quickly with a Union victory. Born on February 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, his father died when he was young. Widowed and unable to care for the entire family, his mother sent brother Thomas to be raised by an aunt and William became a foster child to Thomas Ewing, his father's friend. Cump, as he was known, later married Mr. Ewing's daughter, Ellen. Educated at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he graduated in 1840. During the Mexican War, Sherman was posted in San Francisco. He resigned his commission in 1853 to become a partner in a bank there. Prior to the outbreak of hostilities between the North and the South, William Tecumseh Sherman was Superintendent of the Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy at Alexandria, Louisiana. After the war, the school moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became Louisiana State University (LSU). Talk of the secession from the Union was rampant, yet the motto of the seminary was "By the liberality of the General Government of the United States, the Union - esto perpetua." On January 18, 1861, Sherman resigned his position stating that he preferred to maintain his allegiance to the Constitution as long as a fragment of it survived. On the 25th of February, Sherman left Louisiana and returned to Ohio. He remained in Lancaster for a month and then moved his family to St. Louis, Missouri where he was elected President of the Fifth Street Railroad.

Extractions: Although he was a native of Ohio, the name of Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman remains inextricably linked with Georgia. Born Feb. 8, 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, he graduated from West Point as a second lieutenant in 1840. His first tour of duty was in Florida in a campaign against the Seminole Indians. In 1844, Sherman was stationed for six weeks in Marietta, Ga. (click here After the war, Sherman served as commander of the U.S. Army's Division of the Mississippi. In this role, he helped in the building of the transcontinental railroad by protecting the workers and trying to maintain peace with the Indians along the railroad's path. Under Pres. Grant, Sherman was named commanding general of the Army (1869-1883). After his retirement, Republicans tried to persuade him to run for President, but he repeatedly declined, noting, "If nominated I will not run. If elected I will not serve."
