In 1810, A succeeding poem, The Lady of the Lake (1810) set largely in The Trossachs, received great acclaim and was responsible for an upsurge of tourism in the area especially at Loch Katrine, The Trossachs still enjoys unqualified popularity with both the general visitor and those fond of outdoor pursuits such as walking, fishing and cycling. Scott has been suggested as the originator of the historic novel of which Waverley (1814) was the first of many such to issue from his pen, including Rob Roy The Heart of Midlothian The Bride of Lammermoor Ivanhoe (1819), and The Talisman Rob Roy continued the association with The Trossachs with Rob Roy being born in Glengyle at the western end of Loch Katrine while the BBC recently produced Ivanhoe for TV which used nearby Doune Castle. Although a prolific writer, much sprang from the need for Scott to meet mounting debts and the construction of his house Abbotsford resulted in bankruptcy from which he recovered by a prodigious effort of almost continuous writing. But perhaps the best know was the literary great, Sir Walter Scott. Through is work, Scotland's heritage was restored after years of English oppression. Much of the lore of Scotland as we know it today can be traced directly back to Sir Walter's efforts. Sir Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh in 1771 on August 15th. Educated for the law, he obtained the office of sheriff-depute of Selkirkshire in 1799 and in 1806 the office of clerk of session, a post whose duties he fulfilled faithfully for some twenty-five years. His lifelong interest in Scottish antiquity and the ballads which recorded Scottish history led him to try his hand at narrative poems of adventure and action. The Lay of the Last Minstrel Marmion (1808), and The Lady of the Lake (1810) made his reputation as one of the leading poets of his time. The very early years of his childhood were spent in the Borders at Sandyford (Smailholm) and Kelso before returning to Edinburgh. Walter Scott was educated at Edinburgh High School and Edinburgh University and became a Advocate. He married Margaret Charpentier in 1797 and they had four children. In 1799 Walter Scott became Sheriff- depute of Selkirkshire and shortly after that he and his family moved to the Borders area, first to Ashiestiel then in 1812 to Cartleyhole farmhouse. This land was renamed Abbotsford and the house that now exists was built in stages and ultimately replaced the earlier house. Sir Walter Scott was created a Baronet in 1820 by King George IV. On his death in 1832 he was buried beside his wife at Dryburgh Abbey. Border Connections Sir Walter Scott had connections with the border area through his ancestors, his early childhood and the many times he would ride through the Ettrick, Yarrow, Teviot and Tweed valleys. This love of the Scottish Borders was enhanced when he came to live in the area in 1804. It is not surprising therefore that there are few if any parts of the Way that do not have a close connection with Sir Walter Scott. It is reputed that Sir Walter Scott had visited this Inn. If this is so he would be one of several well-known author/poets to have frequented this establishment. Undoubtedly the strongest literary connection with the Inn is with Robert Burns who penned a verse on the window pane. James Hogg was also thought to frequent the inn.

His first published works were translations - The Chase and William and Helen (1796), a translation of two ballads by G.A. Educated first at Edinburgh High School and then University he was apprenticed to his father and called to the bar in 1792. An avid reader of poetry, history, drama and romances, the young Scott read widely in Italian, Spanish, Latin and German. In his twenties he was influenced particularly by the German Romantics and his first published works were translations of G.A. Bürger and Goethe. These were followed by the collections of border ballads and the narrative poems, written between 1805 and 1815, that first made him famous. By by this time he had also married Margaret Charlotte Charpenter, of a French Royalist family, and became sheriff-deputy of Selkirkshire, in 1797 and 1799 respectively. In 1809 Scott became partners with John Ballanytne in a book-selling business and also, as an ardent political conservative, helped to found the Tory 'Quarterly Review'. In 1811 he built a residence at Abbotsford on the Tweed. By 1815, beginning to feel eclipsed as a poet by Byron, he turned to the novel form for which he is now chiefly famous. A vast number of these were published, anonymously, over approximately the next fifteen years. In 1820 Scott was made a baronet and seven years later, in 1827, he first gave his name to his works. However, in 1826 the book-selling business became involved in the bankruptcy of another company, leaving Scott with debts of approximately £114,000. It is generally believed that some part at least of the profligacy of his writing is attributed to his desire to pay off these debts personally. His work, and along stay at Naples in 1831, undertaken in an attempt to regain his health, took up the rest of his life.

In these novels, Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people as they pass through in violent, dramatic changes in history.
