Wellman, twenty years her senior and married to a concert pianist, had four children by a previous marriage which ended in divorce, and was now dean at Tulane University's School of Tropical Medicine. He and Elsie shared many intellectual interests and he eventually asked her to accompany him to Brazil where he planned to collect insect specimens. They left secretly in December 1913 and by a circuitous route arrived at their destination in February 1914. It was at the beginning of this trip that both Elsie and Wellman changed their names to Scott to protect their identity, with Elsie becaming Evelyn Scott and Wellman changing his to Cyril Kay Scott. She had become pregnant with her only child, Creighton Scott, before they landed. Evelyn later wrote about their poverty and hardships in Brazil in her autobiography, Escapade

Historical Marker: "George Washington Smith (1796? - 1876?) born in Wilson county, Tennessee. George Washington Smith came to Texas in 1834 with his wife Elizabeth Briggs. He fought in the Texas War for Independence (1835-36) as a private in Capt. Clendennin's company, 1st Regiment artillery. In the Mexican War (1846-1848), he served as a sergeant in Company K, 1st regiment of the Texas Rangers, under Col. John Coffee (Jack) Hays. The Smith family settled in Collin County in 1852. When Smith died about 1876, he was buried near the entrance of the present Blue Ridge Cemetery. Later his grave was moved to the Old Burial Grounds Cemetery (1.25 mi. NW) (1979)" More History: Blue Ridge has been around since 1876 and was incorporated in 1936. The town is called Blue Ridge because from the east looking west, the ridge upon which it is located appears to be blue. Located on the Matthias Mowry Survey in northeastern Collin County, the town never grew to a large size. In 150 years, the towns population remained below 600. Some early settlers to the area were: William Warden Jr., J. W. Harts, the Pruetts, the McCarleys, and the Dotsons, can be found in this cemetery. However, the oldest cemeteries in use in the area were the Old Grounds Cemetery, just to the northwest of Blue Ridge, and the Richardson Cemetery east of Blue Ridge on Hwy 981.
