" (from The Surprising Adventures of Baron Muchausen Raspe's carefree life-style led him into troubles. Advertisements were issued for the arrest of the Councillor Raspe, and in 1775 he fled first to Holland and then to England - he was found to have been selling the precious gems and medals in his care to pay his debts. In 1776 he published a book on German Volcanoes. His 'Essay on the Origin of Oil Painting' was published through the help of Horace Walpole in 1781.

López Lasala (IES Victoria Kent, Torrejón de Ardoz (Madrid) Parece ser que Cyrano de Bergerac (1619-1655) fue un hombre libertino y materialista, diferente del héroe romántico que Edmond Rostand (1868-1918) presenta en el drama que lleva su nombre. Pero la fuerza del personaje creado convirtió al falso Cyrano en un mito, representado sin descanso desde entonces y recreado varias veces en la ópera y el cine. Conociendo a Cyrano, y sus narices, suponemos que ya habrá arreglado cuentas con Rostand en el mundo que ahora comparten. Traemos aquí a Cyrano, al de verdad, por un libro que no pudo publicar en vida, El otro mundo , también divulgado en español con el título Historia cómica o Viaje a la Luna . No esperemos encontrar la intriga de una novela; en realidad, es un ensayo cómico-fantástico donde el autor, influido por las ideas racionalistas de su tiempo, repasa diversos aspectos de la condición humana, desde los más trascendentales, como la existencia de Dios, la creación del mundo o la inmortalidad del alma, hasta otros que descubren los prejuicios e incongruencias de nuestras costumbres. Pero, ¿os gustaría conocer las de los habitantes de la Luna?... En la Luna, sólo los animales andan sobre dos patas, por eso confunden al viajero protagonista con un avestruz. Al utilizar las cuatro extremidades, los lunáticos miran al suelo con orgullo, pues así contemplan los bienes de los que son señores; la cabeza erguida de las bestias muestra, en cambio, su actitud suplicante ante el Cielo por depender de los cuadrúpedos. ¿Y su lenguaje? Existen dos idiomas: el que habla el pueblo y el de la grandeza. Éste último es melódico y, en caso de afonía, la entonación puede suplirse con instrumentos musicales. Una aburrida conversación filosófica en la Tierra sonaría en la Luna como un armonioso concierto. El pueblo no da para tanto y se expresa mediante gestos y convulsiones. Unos y otros se alimentan del olor y, para que el cuerpo pueda absorber mejor los nutritivos vapores, es habitual desnudarse antes de comer.
