Extractions: Louis XIV., by moving the court from Paris to VERSAILLES, ostensibly established a new cult and cultural tradition, focussing on the person of the king. The palace of Versailles, constructed between 1661 and 1668 by architect LOUIS LE VAU, was admired and imitated by monarchs all over Europe. The palace had 200 rooms (no toilets) and a large garden, where trees and bushes were cut to form precise geometric shapes. In 1700, around 10,000 men lived in the palace respectively adjacent facilities. Portraits, particularly of the monarch and other high standing persons, were the typical objects of painters. Architects built palaces, opera houses, theatres to facilitate the court life; operas were commissioned by the king or persons at the court; a rich court culture or official culture developed. MOLIERE's comedy TARTUFFE, first performed in 1664, attacking hypocrisy, was immediately banned; yet by 1669 the ban was lifted, the book published and the comedy again performed - the event marks a weakening of the ecclesiastic censorship. Moliere (1622-1683) was favoured by Louis XIV.; in "Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme" (1670) Moliere portraied a caricature of the influential, yet unpopular Jean-Baptiste Colbert. Other celebrated writers of the time include JEAN RACINE (1639-1699), LA ROCHEFOUCAULD (1613-1680), JEAN DE LA FONTAINE (1621-1695, fables), JEAN DE LA BRUYERE (1645-1696), PIERRE CORNEILLE (1606-1684). The COMEDIE FRANCAISE was established in 1680.

Whether or not he really said these words, Louis has been regarded by historians as the typical absolute monarch - a symbol of his era. Similarly, historians have often referred to this period, when kings dominated their states and waged frequent dynastic wars against one another as an age of absolutism. Absolute monarchy, admittedly, was not exactly new in Europe. Since the late medieval period, rulers had been attempting to centralize their authority at the expense of feudal nobles and the church. In the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, however, religious strife blurred political issues and somewhat restricted developing monarchies. After the Peace of Westphalia, which ended the era of disastrous religious wars, absolutism rapidly gained

Úgy is tûnt a XVII. század optikájában és akusztikájában, hogy minden körülötte kering, mint a bolygók a Nap körül. Versailles-i palotája követendõ, sõt utánzandó példa volt királyok, hercegek, módosabb földesurak számára. A Habsburgok Schönbrunnja Bécs mellett, a Hohenzollerek Potsdam ja, illetve királyi pihenõje, a "Sanssouci", az Esterházyak kastélya és parkja Fertõdön, az orosz Petrodvorec Szentpétervár szomszédságában és velük úri otthonok, úri kertek tucatjai mind kicsi Versailles-ok voltak. Az illemszabályok, a táncok, az udvarias ság társalgási szabályai. Európa-szerte olyanok voltak, ahogy Versailles példát adott. A mûvészi és irodalmi ízlés, a stílus mindenütt a Napkirály körére figyelt. A kultúrtörténet ezt a korszakot barokknak nevezi, a barokk pedig folytatta és torzította a r eneszánsz tiszta formáit, egyszersmind elõkészítve a felvilágosodás tiszta gondolkodásmódját. Franciaországban a barokk nemcsak folytatta a reneszánszot, de az ókor stíluseszményét annyira a magáénak tudta, hogy a klasszikus eszmény követését klasszicizmus nak nevezte és nevezzük ma is. Már a francia reneszánsz legfontosabb irodalmi-költõi köre, amely a nagy csoportú csillagkép után "Pléiade"-nak nevezte magát, stílusiránnyá formálta a klasszicizmust.
