E-mail to a friend Printer friendly Reader Comments Post your comment here High-flier Ric Francis has been CIO of three major organisations and is still only 41. In his current role at Safeway he's currently balancing an aggressive and innovative technology strategy with the small matter of the imminent £3bn merger with rival Morrisons. And when he's not there he can be found at Upton Park "crying into his beer" over the plight of his beloved West Ham United. Andy McCue gets an insight into what spurs him on... The first thing that strikes you when you walk into the office of Safeway CIO Ric Francis is not the drab Hayes factory skyline or the various charts and store location maps pinned to the walls but a huge framed New York Yankees baseball shirt signed by the team's batting great, Paul O'Neill. The shirt, which takes pride of place in the office, was a leaving present from colleagues at his last-but-one job as New York-based international CIO of PepsiCo. It was flown out to Seattle to get the player to sign it. Francis says he 'adopted' the Yankees as his sports team during his time in the US as he was unable to get his West Ham United fix. Signed photos of Joe Cole and Paulo Di Canio adorn one of the other walls "I'm found there far too often crying into my beer," he jokes.

Away from his broadcasting duties he's a columnist for The Observer and has written several books, including a biography of Karl Marx and a history of television. Here, he tells us about his listening habits and appearing on Radio 4. What do you enjoy most about appearing on The News Quiz Going to the pub afterwards! And the worst moment is just before, when the producer Lucy Armitage says briskly "Right, let's go out there and do a show". Unlike their counterparts on Have I Got News For You , the News Quiz panellists don't have a clue about what's coming up. I read all the national newspapers pretty thoroughly, especially in The News Quiz weeks, but I still have this lurking fear that I've missed a story about a talking hamster (or the outbreak of World War 3) and will be asked about it.

Essays Of Francis Bacon By Francis Bacon 45 by Francis Bacon. Little low hedges, round, like welts, with some Pretty pyramids,I like well; and in some places, fair columns upon frames of carpenter s work http://www.classicbookshelf.com/library/francis_bacon/essays_of_francis_bacon/45
Extractions: For the ordering of the ground, within the great hedge, I leave it to variety of device; advising nevertheless, that whatsoever form you cast it into, first, it be not too busy, or full of work. Wherein I, for my part, do not like images cut out in juniper or other garden stuff; they be for children. Little low hedges, round, like welts, with some pretty pyramids, I like well; and in some places, fair columns upon frames of carpenter's work. I would also have the alleys, spacious and fair. You may have closer alleys, upon the side grounds, but none in the main garden. I wish also, in the very middle, a fair mount, with three ascents, and alleys, enough for four to walk abreast; which I would have to be perfect circles, without any bulwarks or embossments; and the whole mount to be thirty foot high; and some fine banqueting-house, with some chimneys neatly cast, and without too much glass. For the side grounds, you are to fill them with variety of alleys, private, to give a full shade, some of them, wheresoever the sun be. You are to frame some of them, likewise, for shelter, that when the wind blows sharp you may walk as in a gallery. And those alleys must be likewise hedged at both ends, to keep out the wind; and these closer alleys must be ever finely gravelled, and no grass, because of going wet. In many of these alleys, likewise, you are to set fruit-trees of all sorts; as well upon the walls, as in ranges. And this would be generally observed, that the borders wherein you plant your fruit-trees, be fair and large, and low, and not steep; and set with fine flowers, but thin and sparingly, lest they deceive the trees. At the end of both the side grounds, I would have a mount of some pretty height, leaving the wall of the enclosure breast high, to look abroad into the fields.
The Secret Garden By Francis Hodgson Burnett 1 by Francis Hodgson Burnett. II MISTRESS MARY QUITE CONTRARY Mary had liked to lookat her mother from a distance and she had thought her very Pretty, but as she http://www.classicbookshelf.com/library/francis_hodgson_burnett/the_secret_garde
Extractions: Mary had liked to look at her mother from a distance and she had thought her very pretty, but as she knew very little of her she could scarcely have been expected to love her or to miss her very much when she was gone. She did not miss her at all, in fact, and as she was a self-absorbed child she gave her entire thought to herself, as she had always done. If she had been older she would no doubt have been very anxious at being left alone in the world, but she was very young, and as she had always been taken care of, she supposed she always would be. What she thought was that she would like to know if she was going to nice people, who would be polite to her and give her her own way as her Ayah and the other native servants had done. She knew that she was not going to stay at the English clergyman's house where she was taken at first. She did not want to stay. The English clergyman was poor and he had five children nearly all the same age and they wore shabby clothes and were always quarreling and snatching toys from each other. Mary hated their untidy bungalow and was so disagreeable to them that after the first day or two nobody would play with her. By the second day they had given her a nickname which made her furious. It was Basil who thought of it first. Basil was a little boy with impudent blue eyes and a turned-up nose, and Mary hated him. She was playing by herself under a tree, just as she had been playing the day the cholera broke out. She was making heaps of earth and paths for a garden and Basil came and stood near to watch her. Presently he got rather interested and suddenly made a suggestion.

Extractions: Up to The World Wide Web Virtual Library Cryptography There are two kinds of cryptosystems: symmetric and asymmetric . Symmetric cryptosystems use the same key (the secret key) to encrypt and decrypt a message, and asymmetric cryptosystems use one key (the public key) to encrypt a message and a different key (the private key) to decrypt it. Assymetric cryptosystems are also called public key cryptosystems. Symmetric cryptosystems have a problem: how do you transport the secret key from the sender to the recipient securely and in a tamperproof fashion? If you could send the secret key securely, then, in theory, you wouldn't need the symmetric cryptosystem in the first place because you would simply use that secure channel to send your message. Frequently, trusted couriers are used as a solution to this problem. Another, more efficient and reliable solution is a public key cryptosystem, such as RSA , which is used in the popular security tool PGP sci.crypt and sci.crypt.research

Conclusion Francis Bacon (1561-1626) was Lord Chancellor of England, a philosopher and a pioneer of empirical science. The enclosed style of the garden Francis Bacon recommends was typical of Northern Europe and derived its principles from Italy. The best surviving example of this style in England is Boscobel . Its details were recorded because the future King Charles II of England hid there when being hunted by Cromwell's troops. The illustration shows Boscobel in 1660 but it may have been just the same at the time Francis Bacon wrote his essay.
