    Extractions: Nietzsche was born in 1844. His father, a Lutheran minister, died in 1849. He spent his childhood days surrounded by his mother, his sister, and two aunts. After attending a first rate boarding school (Schulpforta), he went on to study classical philology at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig. At 24 years of age, he earned a professorship at Basel, which is where he truly came to be noticed. At Basel, Nietzsche was the younger colleague of Jacob Burckhardt and Franz Overbeck. His relationship with Overbeck solidified with the two becoming lifelong friends and associates. During the Franco-Prussian war, Nietzsche left Basel and volunteered as a medical orderly on active duty. His time in the military was short and he returned to Basel in a state of shattered health. Instead of waiting to heal, he pushed headlong into a more fervent schedule of study than ever before. In 1872, he published his first book: The Birth of Tragedy. Over the following years, he published several more books as well authoring many opinion pieces. In 1879, he resigned from the university because of ill health. His most productive years were after he left Basel, with the culmination of his work (not to mention notoriety) coming with the writing of Thus Spoke Zarathustra. In 1889, less than two weeks after the completion of Nietzsche contra Wagner, he broke down, insane. His madness is suspected to have been a condition brought on by an advancing case of syphilis. Most of his final years were spent in his sister Elisabeth's care. During this time, Elisabeth grew more and more involved in the burgeoning anti-semitic movements in Germany. While he wasted away, she collected and edited many of his scattered notes and tailored them to suit her own political agenda. The fruition of this was Nietzsche's altered works and philosophy being a cornerstone in the Nazi party and Adolf Hitler's personal mantra. In 1900, he died... in 1901, Elisabeth published The Will to Power.

À l'influence de la culture grecque sur Nietzsche, et en particulier des philosophies de Platon et d'Aristote, s'ajoutèrent celles d'Arthur Schopenhauer, de la doctrine évolutionniste (voir Évolution biologique) et de Richard Wagner. Écrivain fécond, il publia notamment la Naissance de la tragédie (1872), Ainsi parlait Zarathoustra (1883), Par-delà le bien et le mal (1886), la Généalogie de la morale (1887), l'Antéchrist (1896), Ecce Homo (1908) et la Volonté de puissance (1901), dont il ne subsiste que des fragments. Selon une des thèses fondamentales de Nietzsche, les valeurs traditionnelles (représentées essentiellement par le christianisme) ont perdu leur emprise sur la vie des individus : «Dieu est mort», proclamait-il, résumant ainsi le «nihilisme passif» de la civilisation moderne. Les valeurs traditionnelles représentaient, à ses yeux, une «morale d'esclaves», une morale créée par des individus faibles et en proie au ressentiment, qui encouragaient la douceur et la gentillesse pour privilégier des comportements servant leur propres intérêts. Nietzsche soutenait qu'il était possible de remplacer ces valeurs traditionnelles en créant des valeurs inédites, projet qui l'amena à élaborer la notion de surhomme (Übermensch). Toute conduite humaine, selon Nietzsche, est motivée par la volonté de puissance. Dans son sens positif, la volonté de puissance n'est pas uniquement synonyme de pouvoir sur les autres, mais signifie aussi le pouvoir sur soi, indispensable à la créativité. Une telle puissance est manifeste dans l'indépendance, la créativité et l'originalité du surhomme. Affirmant clairement que l'idéal de surhomme ne s'était jamais réalisé, Nietzsche fit toutefois mention de plusieurs personnages susceptibles de servir de figure emblématique du surhomme, comme Socrate, Léonard de Vinci, Michel-Ange, Shakespeare, Goethe, Jules César et Napoléon.

A Naumburg, dove la famiglia si era trasferita, ricevette i suoi primi insegnamenti di religione, latino e greco e imparò a suonare il pianoforte. Dopo avere abbandonato la celebre scuola teologica di Pforta, con disappunto della madre, la quale sperava di vedere il figlio diventare ecclesiastico, Nietzsche studiò filologia classica alle università di Bonn e Lipsia, diventando professore della disciplina all'università di Basilea a soli 24 anni; in quell'epoca si delinearono sempre più chiaramente le sue inclinazioni filosofiche. In questo periodo entrò in relazione con Richard Wagner, del quale divenne amico ed estimatore. Il loro rapporto in seguito degenerò progressivamente fino a rompersi nel 1878. Ma a quel tempo, Nietzsche era già malato da alcuni anni e soffriva di crisi nervose. Nel 1876 abbandonò l'insegnamento per motivi di salute e iniziò la sua vita solitaria e errabonda, che lo condusse a soggiornare a lungo anche in Italia. Guastati i rapporti anche con la famiglia, egli vide peggiorare sempre più il suo stato di salute.
