Extractions: OCT Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the foundations of traditional morality and Christianity. He believed in life, creativity, health, and the realities of the world we live in, rather than those situated in a world beyond. Central to Nietzsche's philosophy is the idea of "life-affirmation," which involves an honest questioning of all doctrines which drain life's energies, however socially prevalent those views might be. Often referred to as one of the first "existentialist" philosophers, Nietzsche has inspired leading figures in all walks of cultural life, including dancers, poets, novelists, painters, psychologists, philosophers, sociologists and social revolutionaries. From the ages of 14 to 19, Nietzsche attended a first-rate boarding school, Schulpforta, located not far from Naumburg, where he prepared for university studies. Here he met his lifelong acquaintance, Paul Deussen, who was confirmed at Nietzsche's side in 1861, and who was to become an Orientalist, historian of philosophy, and in 1911, the founder of the Schopenhauer Society. During his summers in Naumburg, Nietzsche led a small music and literature club named "Germania," and became acquainted with Richard Wagner's music through the club's subscription to the

Life and Works A prolific writer, he wrote several major works, among them The Birth of Tragedy (1872; trans. 1966), Thus Spoke Zarathustra (1883-85; trans. 1954), Beyond Good and Evil (1886; trans. 1966), On the Genealogy of Morals (1887; trans. 1966), The Antichrist (1888; trans. 1954), Ecce Homo (1889; trans. 1966), and The Will to Power (1901; trans. 1910). Nietzsche maintained that all human behavior is motivated by the will to power. In its positive sense, the will to power is not simply power over others, but the power over oneself that is necessary for creativity. Such power is manifested in the overman's independence, creativity, and originality. Although Nietzsche explicitly denied that any overmen had yet arisen, he mentions several individuals who could serve as models. Among these models he lists Socrates, Jesus, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Shakespeare, Goethe, Julius Caesar, and Napoleon.

Life and Works Nietzsche was born on October 15, 1844, in Röcken, Prussia. His father, a Lutheran minister, died when Nietzsche was five, and Nietzsche was raised by his mother in a home that included his grandmother, two aunts, and a sister. He studied classical philology at the universities of Bonn and Leipzig and was appointed professor of classical philology at the University of Basel at the age of 24. Ill health (he was plagued throughout his life by poor eyesight and migraine headaches) forced his retirement in 1879. Ten years later he suffered a mental breakdown from which he never recovered. He died in Weimar on August 25, 1900. In addition to the influence of Greek culture, particularly the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle, Nietzsche was influenced by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, by the theory of evolution, and by his friendship with the German composer Richard Wagner. He is famous for his rejection of altruism; his attacks on Christianity (he declared that "God is dead"); his origination of the Übermensch concept (translated as "Overman" or "Superman"); his embrace of a sort of irrationalism; and something he called "the Will to Power" ( Wille zur Macht ), possibly best regarded as an early attempt at psychology. Nietzsche was strongly influenced by Arthur Schopenhauer and his concept of "the Will to live". Nietzsche presupposed that humans are always attempting to inflict their wills upon others. Every action toward another, according to Nietzsche, is born of a basic desire to bring that other under one's own power in some way. Gift-giving, claims of love, praise, or harmful acts such as physical violence, carrying tales, etc. all stem from the same motive: to exert the will over others. Nietzsche's presupposition entails that human beings are basically and only egoistic. Therefore there are no truly altruistic actions. The theory of the will to power is not limited to the psychology of human beings. Instead, it is the essential nature of the universe, manifest in all things. Growth, survival, dominance in business or physical competition, all are seen as elements of this will. Some see Nietzsche's "will to power" as life-affirming. Creatures affirm instinct in exerting power and dominance. The suffering born of conflict between competing wills and the efforts to overcome one's environment is not evil, but a part of existence to be embraced in that it signifies the healthy expression of the natural order. Enduring satisfaction and pleasure result from living by instinct and successfully exerting the will to power.

Der zweitletzte deutsche Philosoph mit Weltrang wird von vielen verehrt und von wenigen verstanden. Wer war Nietzsche? und was hat er uns heute zu sagen? Nietzsches Vater stirbt früh; er verbringt Kindheit und Jugend mit dem Damentrio Grossmutter, Mutter und Schwester. Er studiert in Leipzig Theologie und klassische Philologie. Kaum 25-jährig, wird Nietzsche 1869 als ausserordentlicher Professor nach Basel berufen. Er pflegt eine intensive Freundschaft mit dem Komponisten Richard Wagner und besucht ihn oft in Luzern. Er reist in dieser Zeit mit einem Basler Reisepass und glaubt lange, er sei deshalb Schweizer. 1879 muss er den Lehrauftrag in Basel aus gesundheitlichen Gründen niederlegen, geplagt von Ruhr und Diphterie, die er sich 1870 im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg zugezogen hat. Er verliebt sich heftig in Lou Salomé, die spätere Freundin Rilkes, und macht ihr einen Heiratsantrag. Nach ihrem «Nein» flüchtet er nach Genua und Rapallo. In diese Zeit der Unruhe fiel die Niederschrift des ersten Teils seines Hauptwerks Also sprach Zarathustra . Ab 1883 ist er immer wieder in Sils-Maria, wo er ein einfaches Haus im Dorf bewohnt.
