It was in Paris that her sense of artistic aesthetics were cemented. Though Man Ray left an indelible impression, she was also deeply influenced by Eugene Atget, who documented a changing Paris before his death in 1927. She took up the same theme when she returned to New York in 1929. She may be best known for her "Changing New York," a project funded by the Works Progress Administration, which recorded both the city's soaring skyline and chaotic streets. She wanted to take on a project to photograph an endangered part of America's past "before

Footnotes The Rewriting of Sexual History A chapter on the battle to control the sexual portrayal of men and women in history. It gives an account of the feminist portrayal of a patriarchal conspiracy to boost the image of men and deny women their rightful place in the record. The analysis reveals that in our feminist society the truth is quite the opposite. The chapter finishes with a brief study on male and female roles in the creation of history. I am currently making an effort to bring this chapter into print as part of a book on sexual politics. If you have any comments on purpose, logic, accuracy or style they would be highly appreciated. I always welcome feedback whether it is negative or positive. Contact Sarcasmo@bigpond.com

By 1900 she had made a name for herself as an aggressive supporter of prohibition, famous for using rocks, hammers and hatchets to destroy saloons and their liquor. Nation, a controversial figure even within the temperance movement, was arrested 30 times between 1900 and 1910, but her antics drew national attention to the issue of alcohol prohibition in the United States.

Extractions: Carry Nation Brown Brothers (1846-1911), reformer Born on November 25, 1846, in Garrard county, Kentucky, Carry Moore as a child experienced poverty, her mother's mental instability, and frequent bouts of ill health. Although she held a teaching certificate from a state normal school, her education was intermittent. In 1867 she married a young physician, Charles Gloyd, whom she left after a few months because of his alcoholism. In 1877 she married David Nation, a lawyer, journalist, and minister, who divorced her in 1901 on the grounds of desertion. She entered the temperance movement in 1890, when a U.S. Supreme Court decision in favor of the importation and sale of liquor in "original packages" from other states weakened the prohibition laws of Kansas, where she was living. In her view, the illegality of the saloons flourishing in that state meant that anyone could destroy them with impunity. A formidable woman, nearly 6 feet tall and weighing 175 pounds, she dressed in stark black and white clothing. Alone or accompanied by hymn-singing women, she would march into a saloon and proceed to sing, pray, hurl biblical-sounding vituperations, and smash the bar fixtures and stock with a hatchet. At one point, her fervor led her to invade the governor's chambers at Topeka. Jailed many times, she paid her fines from lecture-tour fees and sales of souvenir hatchets, at times earning as much as $300 per week. She herself survived numerous physical assaults.
