H. H. Munro, Saki Saki. Hector Hugh Munro, or Saki was a satirist and author with ataste for the witty and outrageous. Saki wrote most of his best http://www.subir.com/saki/
Extractions: Hector Hugh Munro, or Saki was a satirist and author with a taste for the witty and outrageous. Saki wrote most of his best work for newspapers such as the Westminster Gazette, Daily Express, Bystander, Morning Post and Outlook. A master of the short story, Saki entertains like few other writers do at the first reading. It is on subsequent readings that one is made aware of the sheer beauty and ease of Saki's language. Christopher Morley writes that Saki provides one an excellent introduction to "the mysterious jungles of English humour, a savage country with birds of unexpected plumage." Saki is often compared to O. Henry, but I rather suspect his stance is more closely related to Dorothy Parker's. In any case, Saki speaks for himself and indeed it is quite difficult to speak of Saki. Saki was a student of European history and gifted with a prodigious memory, if he had continued to write historical tracts (as his first book was) it is not improbable that the study of history would be looked upon today as a rather light endeavour. Saki was eminently capable of saving an entire discipline from a doddering reputation. His varied interests are apparent in his political satires, short stories and plays. Saki loved wild animals and had a knack of finding the most interesting individuals and places wherever he went. electronic copy of Edward Fitzgerald's translation 1900: The Rise of the Russian Empire 1902: The Westminster Alice 1904: Reginald ( E-text at Wiretap 1910: Reginald in Russia (

Alice Munro Several student essays on Munro's book. http://clem.mscd.edu/~english/3230/munro.htm
Extractions: Length: 350-400 words (As you know, Alice Munro is Canadian, and, yes, I stretched the "boundaries" of our course just a bit to include her.) One of the web resources for this week is "Alice Munro: The Short Answer," a critical essay by Alex Keegan on Munro's work. While Keegan's essay goes beyond The Beggar Maid , he does offer any number of insights into what Munro seems to be "up to" as a writer. Your task is to choose one or more of Keegan's assertions about Munro, her characters, her vision(s), her themes, her method of constructing stories, novels, life, . . . and make an essay out of your choice that in one way or another highlights one or more of the "stories" in The Beggar Maid November 6, 1998

Freeway Killer Accomplice Includes James Munro's apology to the parents of Freeway Killer victim Stephen Wells. http://www.mansonfamilypicnic.com/munro1.htm
Extractions: IONE, CALIFORNIA - The accomplice in the Freeway Killings, James Munro, 37 years of age, and an inmate in the California Department of Corrections asked Governor Davis for the State of California to parole him. Munro was convicted for the 1980 Freeway Murder Case of Steven James Wells, an 18 year old from Downey, CA. Munro was sentenced to 15 years to life pursuant to a plea agreement in which Munro did not want. The Freeway Killings were between the years 1979-80, in which 45 young men were killed by William Bonin and Vernon Butts, the two main perpetrators of these heinous crimes. Bonin and Butts would dump their dead victims bodies alongside the freeways in the Los Angeles area. Munro came to California in 1979. He was a drifter and traveled from one place to another. The only items that Munro had in his possession were the clothes on his back. He had no money to provide shelter and ultimately took to sleeping on the streets of Hollywood, a suburb northwest of Los Angeles, California. Munro did not meet Bonin until early May of 1980, when Bonin picked up Munro in Hollywood, CA. Bonin's potential victims were young males between the ages of 18 to 35 years of age. His victims were usually drifters, the homeless, and young men who seemed not to bright. Bonin would pursue the weak - in which Bonin could feel superior over his victims.
The Collected Short Stories Of H. H. Munro The Collected Short Stories Of HH Munro Madhuram Nagarajan. Hector Hugh Munro isbetter known as Saki, the pseudonym that he wrote his brilliant satires under. http://www.freshlimesoda.com/reviews/madhuram.htm
Extractions: Hector Hugh Munro is better known as Saki, the pseudonym that he wrote his brilliant satires under. His short stories are characterised by scathing wit, a parody of mindless society, and the hypocrisy that was (and, needless to say, is) ubiquitous. And then, of course, there were the young men, who - don't ask me how - 'stayed' young. For instance, I give you this excerpt from 'Reginald' - "My dear Colonel," purred Reginald, "fancy admitting such a thing! Such a give-away for one's age! I wouldn't admit being on this planet in '76." (Reginald in his wildest lapses into veracity never admits to being more than twenty-two.) He's at his best when mocking convention, and his protagonists are uniformly decadent and ultra-wicked. 'The Unrest Cure' brings to the fore the unique qualities of the truly remarkable Clovis Sangrail. He decides, upon overhearing a conversation on a train, that a clergyman and his sister are getting all too set in their ways. What they need, but don't know yet, is an unrest cure, which he proceeds to provide them; turning their pleasant country existence into a breeding ground for violence and, well, of 'un'rest. And how.
In The Eyes Of A Killer James Michael Munro's version of the true story behind the freeway killings. http://www.mansonfamilypicnic.com/munro2.htm
Extractions: CHAPTER ONE - THE HISTORY OF WILLIAM BONIN William George Bonin was born January 8th 1947 to a household ran by his mother Alice Bonin, and two brothers. Bonins' father, a veteran of the armed forces, was living in a veterans hospital while his mother and brothers continued to live on the quiet street of Angel Street in Downey, California. William Bonin lived with his mother until he was 8 years old. Then he ran away from home. He got picked up in the state of Connecticut, and was placed in a detention center. After the years had passed, Bonin was removed and was sent home to Downey, California to live with his kid brothers, and his mother. She loved Bill very much, but started to see a lot of changes in her son - which she had to live with for the rest of her life. Little did she know that her son would turn out to be the notorious "Freeway Killer" who took California by surprise until the 1980's had arrived. As the years were moving on, when Bill was growing up, he was sent to Vietnam. He logged more than 700 hours manning a machine gun. Bonin was assigned to the 205th Assault Support Helicopter unit in Vietnam. Soon after Bonin returned from Vietnam he was arrested, and convicted of sexually assaulting five young men. In each of the cases he would drive the freeways looking for young men to get into his van of death, and torture them as they screamed for their lives - which made this killer even more madder, and ready to kill again. Bonin would strike like a serial killer - hoping the police could not get him. In his eyes, each one got easier each time he would kill.
