John Muir On April 21, 1838, John Muir, one of the world's greatest naturalists, was born. Muir emigrated from Scotland to America in 1849. During his life, Muir was a farmer, inventor, wanderer, writer, conservationist, explorer, aidvisor to presidents, and above all, a naturalist. President Theodore Roosevelt once called him "an emphatically good citizen." From an early age, Muir loved the outdoors, but hard work gave him little opportunity to spend much time in the natural world. A serious injury at the age of 29 caused Muir to turn to nature. He walked a thousand miles from the Midwest to the Gulf of Mexico. From there, he sailed, walked and rode through much of Central America and California. Ultimately, it was the Sierra Nevada and Yosemite that became his spiritual home. He once called the Sierra "the most divinely beautiful of all the mountain chains I have ever seen." Throughout his life, Muir traveled and wrote extensively on what he saw. His focus was not just on the beauty of the wonderful places he visited, but also on the risk of their destruction. A series of articles pointed out the losses caused by unrestrained grazing, logging and overuse.

John Muir - "Travels in Alaska" JOHN MUIR (1838 - 1914) JOHN MUIR, naturalist, is widely regarded as the "Father of the National Parks Movement." He loved to "go to wild places" and experience the wonders of nature. Alaska, like Yosemite in California, was one of Muir's favorite places. Alaska is where Muir came to visit unspoiled wilderness. His novel theories on glacial sculpting of the landscape ultimately proved to be true. Muir's first of seven trips to Alaska in 1879 was highly eventful. Influenced heavily by the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau , he shared their regard for the unity, order, and harmony of nature, their trust in nature's power to illuminate the higher laws of the mind, and their pantheistic approach to imagination and transcendence. Although their ideas were by no means the same as his, Muir devotedly carried and marked copies of Emerson's and Thoreau's works on his hikes and climbs in the Sierra Nevada and elsewhere in the west. In May 1871, Emerson visited Muir at Yosemite in California and the pair quickly became friends. Emerson admiringly listed him in his journal along with Thomas Carlyle , Thoreau, and several others, among those he called "My men."

John Muir emigrated to Wisconsin in the United States of America at the age of eleven. He settled in California in his mature years, after a period of travel and exploration. There he played a crucial role in creating Yosemite National Park. He fought to save the Giant Redwood trees of California and the forests and alpine meadows of the Sierra Nevada from foresters and graziers. He was a founder of the Sierra Club in 1892 and the first President. Now it is the premier conservation body in California. From this position, his writing challenged Establishment figures of the United States to act positively in the emergent conservation debate of the late nineteenth century. One of his greatest achievements was to convert President Theodore Roosevelt to the idea of creating National Parks - the first such system in the world. But for all his contact with the great and the powerful, Muir never lost touch with the common man and with children - the future inheritors of his beloved wilderness.     Extractions: Naturalist and conservationist. Born in Dunbar, Muir emigrated with his family to Wisconsin (USA) in 1849, where he began to develop an interest in the natural world. He was the founder of the U.S. National Park system and regarded as the father of the modern environmental movement. Muir also formed the Sierra Club , dedicated to protecting the environment, and became its first president (1892). He was an early explorer of the Yosemite Valley and did much to ensure its protection. Muir is remembered in the names of numerous physical features and educational institutions in the USA, together with the John Muir Country Park and John Muir Birthplace in his native Dunbar. The John Muir Trust , which was a partner in the purchase and restoration of the Birthplace , was formed in 1983 for the preservation of Britain's wild places. The Trust owns and manages six estates in Scotland totalling 19,000 Ha (47,000 acres); namely Sconser, Strathaird and Torrin on the Isle of Skye, Schiehallion in Perth and Kinross, Sandwood in Sutherland and Knoydart.
