John Muir and Wisconsin (The above picture reproduced from sierraclub.org. Picture John Muir, (1838-1914), was a American naturalist, explorer, and writer. He was an influential conservationist, who worked to preserve wilderness areas and wildlife from commercial exploitation and destruction. His efforts helped to establish Yosemite National Park and Sequoia National Park, both in California. Muir was born in Scotland in 1838. His family immigrated to the United States in 1849 when he was 11 years old and settled on a farm near Portage, Wisconsin. "The Story of My Boyhood and Youth " describes his early years in rural Montello. Muir attended the University of Wisconsin from 1860 to 1863 but did not graduate. When he left college, he took extensive walking trips to study nature, especially plants. In 1867 he made a walking trip from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico to observe the plants, animals, and physical features of the country. During this trip Muir kept extensive journals, which were published after his death as

Extractions: John Muir - farmer, inventor, sheepherder, naturalist, explorer, writer, and conservationist - was born on April 21 , 1838 in Dunbar, Scotland. Until the age of eleven he attended the local schools of that small coastal town. In 1849, the Muir family emigrated to the United States, settling first at Fountain Lake and then moving to Hickory Hill Farm near Portage, Wisconsin. Muir's father was a harsh disciplinarian and worked his family from dawn to dusk. Whenever they were allowed a short period away from the plow and hoe, Muir and his younger brother would roam the fields and woods of the rich Wisconsin countryside. John became more and more the loving observer of the natural word. He also became an inventor, a carver of curious but practical mechanisms in wood. He made clocks that kept accurate time and created a wondrous device that tipped him out of bed before dawn. In 1860, Muir took his inventions to the state fair at Madison, where he won admiration and prizes. Also that year he entered the University of Wisconsin. He made fine grades, but after three years left Madison to travel the northern United States and Canada, odd-jobbing his way through the yet unspoiled land. In 1867, while working at a carriage parts shop in Indianapolis, Muir suffered a blinding eye injury that would change his life. When he regained his sight one month later, Muir resolved to turn his eyes to the fields and woods. There began his years of wanderlust. He walked a thousand miles from Indianapolis to the Gulf of Mexico. He sailed to Cuba , and later to Panama, where he crossed the Isthmus and sailed up the West Coast, landing in San Francisco in March, 1868. From that moment on, though he would travel around the world, California became his home.

Extractions: John Muir April 21 December 24 ) was an environmentalist, naturalist, traveler, writer, and scientist. He is, however, probably best remembered as one of the greatest champions of the Yosemite area's natural wonders. He thought that nature was the outward manifestion of God and that the Sierra Nevada was sacred ground, even calling it the "Range of Light." Anticipating the animal rights movement , Muir argued with vigor about what he considered the questionable ethics of hunting (calling it the "murder business"). He also anticipated modern conservation biologists by recognizing that everything in nature is connected and that the preservation of large tracts of unfragmented wilderness was the only real way to ensure a healthy ecosystem . Because of this, he argued for the protection of entire river drainages, instead of isolated valleys. Muir was born in Dunbar , East Lothian, Scotland and grew up on a Wisconsin farm. He attended the University of Wisconsin for several years, but instead of graduating from a school built by the hand of man, Muir opted to enroll in the "university of the wilderness" and thus walked a thousand miles from Indiana to Florida . He had planned to continue on to South America , but was stricken by malaria and went to California instead.

Extractions: In America, his love for the natural world grew as he roamed the fields and woodlands near his home. Despite receiving no formal education, he taught himself maths, literature and philosophy and became a budding inventor. Following university, he worked for four years as an inventor and industrial engineer. However, in 1867 an accident left him temporarily blind and when his sight returned, he left his 'industrial life' to turn back to his love of wild places. He set out on a 1000 mile walk from Florida to Cuba, but throughout the remainder of his life he also travelled throughout the rest of America, Alaska, Australia, South America, Africa and Europe. He became a successful writer and through his articles was able to highlight the destruction of the countryside by livestock. Largely through his efforts, the first National Park was set up in Yosemite in 1890 and many Americans view Muir as "The Father of National Parks". He continued campaigning for the conservation of wild places until the year before his death.
