He came to San Diego in 1912 as part of the World's Fair Stock Company. That same year he married fellow actress Ruth Van Deusen on stage during rehearsals. They settled in San Diego and had a daughter. Dillon performed as an actor at various theaters and apparently managed the Grand Theater, and perhaps others, before moving on to radio in the 1930s.

Fox FAQs Lunacy, vaudeville skits, and the Famous Pacific Coast Star Miss Florence Robertsand her Company in The Woman Intervenes by J. Hartley Manners, author of http://www.fullertonheritage.org/Advocacy_Issues/foxhistory.htm
Extractions: Over the decades, the Fox Fullerton Theatre became popular with both tourists and residents. Theater promoters encouraged visitors to engage in a day of "motoring, dining, and theater" by taking the "orange-scented highway" to Fullerton where they would see the best in vaudeville, cinema art, music, and stage presentations. Movie premiers were regularly scheduled, and the theater featured personal appearances by many film luminaries, including Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Mack Sennett, Vilma Banky, Colleen More, Janet Gaynor, Dolores Del Rio, Judy Garland, and Mickey Rooney. Along with films, stock companies and big time stage shows, such as "George Whites Scandals", continued to appear at the theater until the 1950s. MEYER AND HOLLER, INC.

Jazz Me News In a 1922 drama entitled The National Anthem, which was concerned with the debaucheryof modern youth, playwright J. Hartley Manners argued that the new music http://www.worldofgramophones.com/news18.html
Extractions: May 2002 A LONG WAY, BABY! by Dick Hyman (left) At its 1901 convention in Denver, the American Federation of Musicians condemned ragtime in a harsh statement delivered by its president. Union musicians were specifically cautioned against playing ragtime, and the Federation's president maintained that "... the musicians know what is good, and if the people don't, we will have to teach them." Clearly, union musicians were a different breed in those days, and the smugness of the A. F. of M. suggests the intensity with which a radical shift in public taste would be debated. I'm indebted to Neil Leonard, whose 1962 book Jazz and the White Americans (University of Chicago Press) documents the opinion above, and the ones that follow, along with much additional insight. I discovered the book in the Lincoln Center Music Library in New York. If you can locate a copy, I think you would find it enlightening reading.

Glbtq >> Arts >> Lunt, Alfred , And Lynn Fontanne Edward Knobloch s Milestones, her career languished until she met American stagestar Laurette Taylor and her husband, English playwright J. Hartley Manners. http://www.glbtq.com/arts/lunt_fontanne.html
Extractions: page: Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne delighted Broadway audiences with their masterful stagecraft. They became known as the first family of the American theater, but theirs was a lavender marriage (that is, a marriage of a gay man and a lesbian designed to create and sustain the illusion of heterosexuality), and their presentation of themselves as the ideal American couple may have been their most skillful performance. The public was enchanted by what seemed to be a storybook taleromance, Broadway stardom, and a marriage of over fifty years for a farm boy from Wisconsin and a delicate English beauty. Sponsor Message. Lunt's Early Years Alfred David Lunt, Jr. did not actually grow up on a farm. He was born in Milwaukee on August 12, 1892. His father, Alfred David Lunt, a lumberman and land agent, died when the younger Lunt was only two. Five years later his widow, Harriet Washburn Briggs Lunt, married Carl Sederholm, a doctor. Lunt was educated at the private Milwaukee Academy and then at the Carroll College Academy in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Upon graduation, he enrolled at Carroll College. He considered studying set design or architecture but soon realized that theater performance was his true calling. He became a member of the Carroll Players under the direction of May Rankin, whom Lunt consistently praised in later years for the excellence of her teaching and for her encouragement of her students.

Extractions: Peg o' My Heart b 87') En: 6 Ed: 6 Based on a very successful play by J. Hartley Manners, an Irish lass inherits two million pounds but must spend three years in England and never see her father again, neither of which proves worth it. In Ireland Pat O'Connell (J. Farrell MacDonald) provides a steady diet of fish for his daughter Peg (Marion Davies) until solicitor Gerald Markham (Onslow Stevens) informs him his father-in-law died and left two million pounds to Peg if she will live with Mrs. Chichester for three years and never see her father again. After a ship's crew is lost, Pat agrees. Peg says good-bye to her father, who calls her "Peg o' my heart." At the large English house Peg finds the servants and inhabitants unfriendly. She sees Chris (Alan Mowbray) kiss Ethel (Juliette Compton), who sends her to the kitchen. Mrs. Chichester (Irene Browne) reminds her daughter Ethel they are penniless and are getting 5,000 pounds a year to board Peg, whom she calls Margaret. Peg refuses to give up her dog; but Gerald persuades them to let him stay in the stable, though Peg sneaks the dog into her bed. Peg tells Mrs. Chichester that she is not like a mother. Mrs. Chichester tells Ethel to marry Gerald and Alaric (Tyrell Davis) to marry Margaret. Gerald asks Ethel to marry, and she says yes. This story contrasts snobs who would be wealthy with the happiness of working people like Pat and Gerald as well as the irrepressible Peg, who loyally rejects such a hateful will and finds happiness anyway.
