Wren's career a few years ago for a collection of adventure novels which I introduced for Collins Classics, and was surprised to find, on looking into his background, a number of discrepancies between the biographical publicity put out by publishers, and his entry in Missing Persons , a recent volume of the Dictionary of National Biography , generally regarded as the ultimate authority. Have a look at Missing Persons ; the Wren article is most interesting, and when you've read it you'll understand why I was left rather puzzled, and was cautious in writing my own short note about him. P.C. Wren remains something of a mystery. Mr. Fraser and the Brigadier on Dickens of the Mounted GMF: There's no mystery about the supposed "Flashman" figure in Dickens of the Mounted an impudent impostor, and a most unconvincing one. He's vulgar, his style and speech are manifestly bogus, he's the wrong age, calls himself "Major" thirty years after Flashman became a colonel, is "portly" and "waddles" when everyone knows that Flashy never lost his lancer figure, and he even waxes his moustache and wears a monocle, for God's sake, affectations which Flashman would have scornedd... it hardly seems necessary to add that Flashman was nowhere near Regina in November, 1885, and was never in the Canadian militia. Someone, far from "seeing right through him", has been badly hoaxed which reminds us, yet again, that the only reliable information about our hero is that contained in the Flashman Papers, and other "accounts" should be ignored.

Help The Princess and the Goblin and The Princess and Curdie are two of the most unusual and haunting fairy tales ever written. The first begins like the familiar story of Sleeping Beauty: a princess finds her way to a tower of the castle, where an old woman sits spinning. But the old woman turns out to be a kind of wise woman who has a lamp like the moon, keeps white pigeons, and tends a fire of red and white roses. Instead of falling asleep, Princess Irene becomes more and more awake and aware: she begins to understand that the castle and all the local people are in danger from the goblins that live in the caves under the mountain. With the help of the miner's son, Curdie, the goblins are routed, the king her father returns and order is restored.

    Extractions: This Hyper-Concordance is written in C++, a program that scans and displays lines based on a command entered by the user. The main advantage of the C++ program is that it not only identifies the concordance lines but the words occurring to the left and the right of the word or phrase searched. It also reports the total number of text lines, the total word count and the number of occurrences of the word or phrase searched. The full text of the book is displayed in a box at the bottom of the screen. Each line of the text is numbered, and the line number and the term(s) searched provide a link to the full text. The Hyper-Concordance displays two pull-down boxes. The user can first choose one of a selection of authors from the box and then one from a list of the author's works. There are four limiting options displayed before searching: case sensitive, non-alphabet character sensitive, head length and tail length. The searcher can also ascertain the book's total word count and vocabulary distribution by searching without a query. I hope this web-based KWIC concordance (Key Word in Context) offers a clear survey of Victorian literary texts.     Extractions: George MacDonald George MacDonald was born in the north of Scotland, where Gaelic myths and Old Testament stories sank into him and formed the mind that would later cherish imagination as the vehicle of spiritual truth. Even as a youth he was sensitive to the implications of what older people appeared to say thoughtlessly. When a preacher persistently expounded a doctrine of predestination (with its notion that God did not love and would not redeem a large class of humankind) he announced to his family that he didn't love God if God didn't love everyone. This kind of hyper-Calvinism would arouse his antipathy for the rest of his life. While still a young boy he was repulsed in equal measure by the established Church of Scotland (it struck him as intellectually abstract and spiritually ineffective) and by the sects (they struck him as all heat and no light). Yet he admitted that the sincere seeker could find God in either. Although the Scots had a reputation for theological precision, MacDonald thought it to be the product of the dissecting knife: fine work done on something lifeless. For doctrine (as he had seen it handled) appeared to have been made a substitute for living faith where the believer's heart is rightly related to the heart of God. 1840 found him at Aberdeen University where he gained his highest marks in chemistry and physics. A severe shortage of money evaporated his plans to study medicine. He gave himself to literature, his passion for the rest of his life.
