Extractions: Born in Woolwich, English poet, Richard Lovelace was one of the Cavalier poets. A Royalist, he served with the French army during the Civil War. In 1642, he was arrested for presenting parliament with a petition that favored the restoration of the Anglican bishops, who'd long been excluded from the Long Parliament. Fleeing to France, he was again imprisoned after he returned to England in 1648, but was freed in 1649. Having exhausted his fortune for the Royalist cause, he died in poverty and obscurity.
