Extractions: (c) Robert Borofsky (Webmaster, 2004) Ashmead, Albert S. An Ancient Peruvian Effigy Vase Exhibiting Disease of the Foot. American Anthropologist. July-September, 1907 Vol. 9 (3): 738-740. Ashmeads article discusses the implications of the features of a Pre-Colombian water bottle from the Pachacamac Graveyard in Peru with references to his own past research and a brief discussion of related subject matter depicted in ancient Peruvian art. A photograph of the object from two angles accompanies the article. A large sphere forms the body of the bottle. A much smaller sphere with ears and incised facial features and a cylindrical spout opening on top represents the head. The small cylindrical curved handle of the bottle connects the back of the head to the top of the bottles body. The figure represented holds one pockmarked foot in its hands, sole pointed upwards. He also devotes a few paragraphs to the issue of amputation in Peruvian society, linking the amputation of the feet to the disease uta, a cure still used in Peru at the time of the article. He cites research into other types of amputation as forms of punishment, noting that other visual arts depict the loss of an ear, a hand, but never the feet, as punishment for a crime. He says that even if people lost hands to the disease, this would not be depicted on water bottles, often found at grave sites (perhaps as water holders for the dead), since an individual needed his or her hands to eat and drink on his or her final journey to the moon. Ashmead ends his article with an open invitation to other European anthropologists to inform him if they find evidence of mortuary pottery depicting figures with their hands amputated.

Extractions: ) J. W. Rush was born in Fayette county. Pa., in 1822, coming to Ill. in 1854, when that state was thought of as "away out west." In 1862 at the age of 40 he enlisted in the 129 Reg. Ill. Vol., going with Sherman in his famous march "to the sea," and engaging in active service in the last battle of the civil war. In 1872 he again determined to try his fortune in a new state, consequently landed in York county in June of that year, under the law lately coming into effect giving the soldier 160 acres of land. He homesteaded that amount on Sec. 18, Twp. 9, R. 1, W. When he and his wife and children proceeded to make a home in the best sense of the word. Mr. Rush had brought with him from Pennsylvania, a love for the fruit tree, and his was one of the first orchards in the county. Several years ago ( ) he moved to McCool and now lives at Blue Vale with his daughter, Mrs. S. S. Deffenbaugh, his wife having died some years ago. Mr. Rush celebrated his 90th birthday recently, and is, we think, the oldest homesteader living in the county at this time.

Rene1 Julien1,2 was born 04 July 1669 in Vitre , Brittany, France, and died Aft. 1744 in Winchester, Virginia- Opequon Cemetary. He married Mary or Margaret Bullock3 Abt. 1690 in Bermuda ?, daughter of Captain Bullock and Mary. She was born Unknown in Bermuda ?4,4, and died Abt. 1750 in Winchester, Virginia- Opequon Cemetary. Notes for Rene Julien: The earliest record of Rene in Bohemia Manor is in 1720 as shown by land leases. The rest of the period from 1712 until 1720 is blank so far as he is concerned, except for the record of the birth of his son Isaac in 1716, which appears in the Register of St. Ann's Parish at Annapolis which is now in the hall of Records there. Rene and Mary had seven sons and three daughters who grew up in Bohemia Manor. Whether or not they were born there is uncertain. It is known that the two daughters were married there, and it is probable that some of the other children were also. By 1737, when Rene assigned his lease in Bohemia Manor to Henry McCoy he was 68 years old. It is assumed that this was the date of his going to Winchester, Fredrick County, Virginia. Rene was still living in 1744, the last documentary date of him known to exist. It is thought that he and his wife are buried in old Opequon Cemetery near Winchester (land for this cemetery was given by William Hoge, into whose family son Isaac married).
