Extractions: The Second Edition of Zen and the Art of the Internet is available from Prentice Hall. It's grown approximately 30 pages from the First Edition, and features hundreds of changes, revisions, and additions. It's in paper form (not hard-cover). Opened by a Foreword by Edward Vielmetti, VP of Research for MSEN, the second edition of Zen is (if I do say so myself) a vast improvement over the First. It's cleaner, more professionally composed, and far more complete than its predecessor. Also, many, many errors and omissions were fixed. A number of suggestions from the net community itself (like mentioning Hytelnet, including an appendix giving the different ISO country codes, etc.) were encorporated, in the hope that it will be as useful as possible to you, the reader.

Book Review: Zen And The Art Of The Internet.... A review of . Zen and the Art of the Internet a Beginner s Guide, second edition. by Brendan P. Kehoe Prentice Hall, 1992. 112 pages http://www.homepage.montana.edu/~sheehan/bookreviews/kehoe.html
Extractions: Prentice Hall, 1992. 112 pages Art and magic are the legacy of the early years of computing. Among programmers today, there's still respect even reverence for a neatly crafted bit of code or a novel mathematical algorithm. For many of the rest of us, though, the magic of MicroSoft Windows 3.1 and the gee-whiz features of Aldus Freehand either start out shabby or wear thin soon after the shrink wrap comes off the box. Brendan Kehoe has found a corner of computing internetworking, to be exact in which some of the old art and magic remain. What's Zen about it? I don't know. ("Good answer," says a man passing by in a saffron robe.) But Kehoe wraps us in the art and magic of the Internet in his slim book. First things first. What is the Internet? It's a network of networks. Fine; what's a network? It's a system of wires that connects computers to one another. Why do we connect computers? So they and their users can share information, printers, disks, and other resources. So then why do we connect networks? So your computer on your network and my computer on my network can communicate, regardless of where they are. How many computers are connected to the Internet? At last count, 900,000. By the time you read this it will be a million. Most of us start out using our local eddies in the wide, rushing Internet to connect from a desktop PC to a central mainframe computer somewhere near us. Maybe we use the mainframe for electronic mail. Maybe we use it to run software that we can't get for our desktop machines. There are lots of ways of connecting to a mainframe, and not all of them are related to the Internet. But if you use a program called Telnet to connect from your computer to another, chances are good you're on the Internet. You may not know it, but a variation of the Telnet command that connects you to the mainframe down the street can also connect you to a mainframe on the other side of the world!

Extractions: Brendan's Home Page For nearly eight years, I worked for Cygnus Solutions, now part of RedHat , performing as a software engineer, manager of two development teams, voting member of the Standardization committee , and chair of the Performance Committee creating a technical report on the use of C++ in real time and embedded systems. Oh, and also everything possible in between. Nowadays I'm doing contracting work (C++, linux, perl, you name it), volunteer work setting up computer and networking facilities for schools, and try to spend lots of time writing. Since 1994, I've been maintaining a running catalog of web sites that pertain to information about, or for, children. After finishing the online first edition of my book Zen and the Art of the Internet , I published the second, third, and fourth editions of it with Prentice Hall . I have a list of the ISBNs of the different translations, if you're interested. You can find out about updates to it by writing to the email address guide-request@zen.org Another book in the Zen series, Children and the Internet: A Zen Guide for Parents and Educators , was completed in 1996.
