Franks, Romans, Feudalism, and Doctrine: An Interplay Between Theology and Society (Part I) by Father John Romanides Introduction In the background of dialogue and the Ecumenical Movement for the reunion of Christendom lies the generally recognized fact that there is an interplay between theology and society, which may lead to a dogmatic formulation and become the cause of doctrinal differences. Within the Roman Empire doctrinal conflicts took place usually among Roman citizens in a atmosphere of religious and philosophical pluralism. With the official recognition of Orthodox Christianity, we witness the beginning of the use of doctrinal differences in support of nationalistic movements of separate identity and secession from Roman rule, both political and ecclesiastical. Both Nestorianism and so-called Monophysitism, although initially promoted by Roman nationals, were finally supported by separatist tendencies among such ethnic groups as Syrians, Copts, and Armenians. Indeed, both Persians and Arabs took care to keep Christians separated. By the eighth century, we meet for the first time the beginning of a split in Christianity which, from the start, took on ethnic names instead of names designating the heresy itself or its leader. Thus in West European sources we find a separation between a Greek East and a Latin West. In Roman sources this same separation constitutes a schism between Franks and Romans.

Extractions: A Break With Scripture and the Church Those who promote the ordination of women are well aware that in achieving their aims they would change the teaching of the church, its interpretation of Scripture and be out of step with the majority of Christians in the world today. By what authority can they overturn 2000 years of church history? They find no support from the Old Testament, because no woman was permitted to serve as a priest. And in the New Testament, Jesus called only male apostles. Judas' replacement had to be a male. The injunctions of St Paul exclude women from teaching God's Word in the worship assembly. There is not a single word of Scripture which provides a mandate for the ordination of women. Before the 20th Century Before the 20th Century, the Christian church always reserved the Office of the Ministry to males. The only exceptions have been certain heretical sects. The councils of the church, liturgies, constitutions, church orders, patriarchs, popes, bishops and all the church fathers have affirmed women were not to teach in the church or preside over the Lord's Supper. Those who favoured the ordination of women were regarded as heretics and expelled from the church. Nor was the church swayed by social and cultural pressures. It is instructive to look at some of this evidence. The Didascalia, a liturgy from AD 225, says, 'If it had been necessary that women should teach, then our teacher [Jesus] would have directed them to instruct along with us' (3:6:1-2).

Extractions: Introduction The so-called Schism Ecclesiology The Question ... Return I. Introduction 1) Representatives of nine Orthodox Churches signed an agreement with representatives of the Vatican contained in a document entitled, "Uniatism, method of union of the past, and the present search for full communion." This was produced by members of the Orthodox-Vatican Dialogue at their VIIth Plenary Session 17-24 June 1993 at Balamand, Lebanon. 2) Six Orthodox Churches did not send representatives. Some boycotted this meeting in protest against the Vatican's anti-Orthodox and anti-Moslem responsibilities for the war in Bosnia, and other anti-Orthodox actions in parts of Eastern Europe and the Middle East. Some Orthodox Churches have come to realize the Vatican's centuries old "pattern" or "tactic" of "simultaneous war and dialogue" which it had transformed in the 1960s into "simultaneous attacks of Love and dialogue in public" and "underhanded activities in private." 3) The classic example of this earlier tactic was the dialogue between the Franco-Latins and the Roman Orthodox at Bari, Italy, in 1098. The Franco-Latins had just completed the expulsion of the Roman Orthodox from the Papacy in 1009/12-1046. This was followed up by William the Conqueror's capture of England in 1066 and by his appointment of the Lombard Lanfranc as the first Franco-Latin Archbishop of Canterbury with the blessings of the Lombard Pope Alexander II in 1070. Lanfranc and his Franco-Latin bishops got their apostolic succession by dismissing all their Celtic and Saxon predecessors en masse
