Businessman by day and composer by night, Ives's vast output has gradually brought him recognition as the most original and significant American composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Inspired by transcendentalist philosophy, Ives sought a highly personalized musical expression through the most innovative and radical technical means possible. A fascination with bi-tonal forms, polyrhythms, and quotation was nurtured by his father who Ives would later acknowledge as the primary creative influence on his musical style. Studies at Yale with Horatio Parker guided an expert control overlarge-scale forms. He began composing before he went to Yale to study music and where he played the organ. Afterwards he had a successful career working in insurance and he only composed in his leisure hours. Eventually his health suffered from the strain and he composed very little after 1927, although his reputation grew. They are expressed in a musical idiom that makes use of complex polytonality (the use of more than one key or tonality at the same time) and rhythm. Charles Ives Works Ives’s third symphony, for small orchestra, entitled "Camp Meeting", reflects much of his own background, and has separate movement titles "Old Folks Gatherin'", "Children's Day" and "Communion". The fourth symphony includes a number of hymns and Gospel songs, and his so-called First Orchestral Set, otherwise known as New England Symphony, which depicts three places in New England. He wrote a number of psalm settings, part-songs and verse settings for unison voices and orchestra.

This kind of daring approach marks most of Charles Ives's music and explains its slow acceptance in the musical world. Ives's music is marked by a number of individual features. He was fearless in his use of unconventional approaches to rhythm and harmony, and he took great offense at what he saw as lazy, conventional music (especially the salon styles of the late nineteenth century) dependent on European models. Instead, he wanted a music that reflected his view of America: rugged, individualistic, unafraid to experiment. In his music we find an incredible mix of hard-edged dissonance and nostalgic quotations of favorite hymn tunes; of the elevated language of the concert-music tradition and the vernacular of popular songs and ragtime. He saw music as a reflection of the transcendental philosophies of Thoreau and Emerson, and he tried to realize this in pieces such as his unfinished "Universe Symphony"—a work that was to be performed by multiple orchestras spread out on different hilltops.

Extractions: Charles Ives was influenced firstly by his father, a bandmaster who had libertarian ideas about what music might be. Aged around 19 (the dating of Ives's music is notably problematic), he produced psalm settings that exploit polytonality and other unusual procedures. He then studies with Parker at Yale from 1894 to 1898, and he demonstrated signs of becoming a relatively conventional composer in his first symphony (1898), and songs of the period. However, he did not work in the music, but the insurance business and composition became a weekend activity, but one he practised assiduously. During the twenty years following his graduation he wrote three more symphonies, and numerous other orchestral and instrumental works. The only consistent characteristic of music from this period is liberation from rule. He composed little after 1922 when he published a volume of 114 songs.
