Extractions: AN OASIS AND RESTING SPOT FOR TRAVELERS by Teddy Lovejoy In the late 18th century there stood a modest log chapel near the intersection of two major roads used by immigrants and traders, one north-south from Petersburg to Chatham and the other east-west from New Bern to Salisbury. The Church of England had erected this "chapel-of-ease," a place of worship for persons living distant from the Parish church. The chapel stood on the site that is today the parking lot of the Carolina Inn. It was in November of 1792 when members of a site selection committee took lunch under a giant tulip tree, (the "Davie Poplar") and found the spot so lovely that they recommended it as suitable for the placement of a university. The location at New Hope Chapel Hill had much to recommend it. It stood on a hill covered by a dense hardwood forest. Plenty of fresh water was available in the abundance of springs and small streams running down into two major creeks, one to the north and the other to the south. "There is nothing more remarkable in this extraordinary place, than the abundance of springs of the purest and finest water, which burst from the side of the ridge, and which have been the subject of admiration both to hunters and travelers ever since the discovery and settlement of that part of the country. Several of the lots on the north side of the town have the advantage of including a spring." (General William R. Davie, September 25, 1793)
